Phoenix II is an update of Crane Song’s suite of TDM plug-ins designed to emulate the unique properties of a magnetic tape machine. Phoenix II runs both NATIVE and DSP on Avid’s AAX format. Beta now available with additional AU and VST3 formats! Phoenix II uses 32 bit floating point math and has a lower noise floor than the original release. Designer Dave Hill has crafted this software with the same attention to detail he used to create the electronics for ATR Service’s much heralded “Aria” discrete tape recorders. His intimate knowledge of analog electronics, as well as decades of experience as a recording engineer has spawned a very useful, musical suite of plug-ins. The Phoenix II process not only incorporates the nonlinear saturation characteristics created by magnetic tape itself, but also includes the interrelation of an analog tape recorder’s record/reproduce electronics and equalization curves. Phoenix II is a ground-up application derived from HEDD technology, and specifically engineered and optimized for Avid’s AAX architecture.

ECHOSON is the new weapon to unleash the creativity and bring to life new and original sounds. Many contemporary engineers use it on vocals, keyboards and drums to achieve a unique tone. ECHOSON, the revolutionary simulation of a legendary Drum Delay, originally manufactured by the Italian company Binson. ECHOSON goes beyond the mere simulation of the original unit, by adding features not available in the hardware. One of the main addition is the option to double the processor panel to have it working on a stereo pair of audio channels with cross-feedbacks between the channels. The original units have been manufactured in the ’60s and ’70s by an Italian company. They are currently in high demand thanks to their unique tone which adds a touch of personality to modern recordings.

The simulation of an old lofi tape machine sound

In order to achieve the warm and wobbling sound of vintage tape sounds, we have equipped Magnetic with lots of nice tools. Besides the charismatic Wow & Flutter there is chorus, bit crushing, a tape saturation and a versatile vibrato. But also worth to mention is the noise option – certainly an unique and charismatic feature: While playing one of the Electro Pianos, you can add a noise layer to it. Vinyl crackle, hiss, wind, rain and various tape sounds are also available. Finally you can adjust the volume and tone of the noises to suit your electric piano sound. But surley the centerpiece is the 8 different electric pianos. We re-recorded a lot of electric pianos, ran them through our Roland, Dynacord or Revox tape machines or combed through our synthesizer collection, resulting in 8 different charismatic and exciting electric pianos!

Tube Magnetic Saturator GE

Tube Magnetic Saturator is a homemade hardware piece that I built some years ago. DTE is the first library come from that unit. The last evolution includes a discrete input stage, a vintage magnetic-tape head circuit followed by a modern class A tube preamp with 6 valves working at high voltage: 300V. The magnetic-head is digitally controlled to emulate, in analog domain, different speeds and tape printing, while a discrete solid state preamp drives the signal to saturate it.

Analog Modeled Italian Magnetic Echo Plugin.

Echoes T7E is a faithful recreation of a vintage tube magnetic echo made in Italy in the early ‘60s. This echo effect unit is based on a magnetic spinning drum with both record and playback heads arranged around a recording wire wound around the drum circumference. This solution provides better stability over the usual tape transport with reduced wow and flutter. Since the main “core” of this effect is based on the above mechanism, we modelled both the mechanics and the electronics. Echoes T7E also provides 3 different playback modes allowing you to set different spinning speed or ever synchronize it to your host tempo extending the original delay length from ~310ms up to ~1100ms.
