SNOP’s analog devices replicate the unique imperfections of mediums like cassette tapes, VHS, and records through countless non-linear processing steps. These include wow, flutter, bias, azimuth shifts, phase errors, noise, filters, dropouts, tape saturation, stereo imaging, and custom impulse responses, all capturing the authentic character of each machine.
While modern recording engineers and producers are used to the huge variety of effects options available these days, tape machines were the first devices used in the recording studio as effect processors. From echo and flanging to the warmth and saturation of the actual tape itself, the entire early history of music would sound completely different if these recording decks weren’t employed in this way. P821 MDN Tape is based on Marc Daniel Nelson’s personal Stephens 821 2” tape machine Which was utilized at the Producer’s Workshop, renowned for producing iconic albums such as The Wall, Aja, Rumours, and others. The P821 signature sound is very open and has a large sonic character, as there is very little electronics and zero transformers in the tape machine, making the sound stage massive and no aggressive compression or clamping down. Phoenix II is an update of Crane Song’s suite of TDM plug-ins designed to emulate the unique properties of a magnetic tape machine. Phoenix II runs both NATIVE and DSP on Avid’s AAX format. Beta now available with additional AU and VST3 formats! Phoenix II uses 32 bit floating point math and has a lower noise floor than the original release. Designer Dave Hill has crafted this software with the same attention to detail he used to create the electronics for ATR Service’s much heralded “Aria” discrete tape recorders. His intimate knowledge of analog electronics, as well as decades of experience as a recording engineer has spawned a very useful, musical suite of plug-ins. The Phoenix II process not only incorporates the nonlinear saturation characteristics created by magnetic tape itself, but also includes the interrelation of an analog tape recorder’s record/reproduce electronics and equalization curves. Phoenix II is a ground-up application derived from HEDD technology, and specifically engineered and optimized for Avid’s AAX architecture.
