The Proteus Rack Library was produced by the original E-MU sound and graphic designers. Starting with the original hardware sound samples, instruments are mapped and programmed to match the hardware sound modules. The powerful script programming integrates the hardware functionality to the software for the same great look and feel of the sound modules. This new sound library is not an update to the original Proteus Pack. The sound module synthesizers have been built from the ground up. Now designed for Native Instruments free Kontakt Player, the full version of Kontakt, Komplete, and Maschine. The instruments are seamlessly integrated and can be controlled by all NKS hardware. Our first Motown Bass, to which we have dedicated to the legend James Jamerson last year, was recorded with a Precision Bass. It quickly became clear to us that we would be recording a HOFNER Bass in the second edition of the Motown Bass. When we noticed in our session that this bass sounds so incredibly good, we decided to sample three different positions with 10 round robins and 3 velocity layers exclusively in this edition. We have succeeded in sampling and scripting the Höfner bass in the neck, both and in the bridge position so that the sound sounds incredibly real and authentic. The result is more than impressive! The real strength of this bass guitar lies in its playability. No machine-gun effect thanks to 10-Round-Robins and 3 Velocity layers. The typical Motown Bass feeling can be felt due to the different articulations.

A library of playable two-note slurs for creating expressive string textures. Play overlapping pairs of notes within a perfect 4th of each other to trigger the two-note slurs, or “ripples”. On string instruments, there’s a kind of energy and life you can put into the sound as you travel between two notes, especially if you play them in a single bow stroke. You can lean into the first note expressively, and then let the second note fold into the release of the first note so that they sound like one gesture. If these notes were recorded separately, then stitched together later, it wouldn’t have the same nuance. It’s gratifying to play these two-note slurs across different dynamics. To capture this feeling, the samples are all recorded as swells. At the beginning of the swell, the second note can be played so lightly that the pitch is hardly perceptible. It’s like a ghost note. Then, as the sound grows, the slurs naturally change and adapt to keep it fresh.

Introducing LIMINAL: VOCAL TEXTURES VOLUME 2, our second library of human vocalist samples – playable using the full version of Kontakt 6.7.1+. The library’s articulations are expressive and evolving, with the performer imparting character and movement into each sample. The performers were mic’d closely using large diaphragm condenser microphones, capturing breath and characteristic intimacy into each sample. The library is well-suited to add unpredictability and creative imperfection. The LIMINAL range is not intended for fast passages or soaring melodies. Instead, you may see the libraries as collections of naturalistic pads – offering humanistic details not found in something derived from a synthetic source. Several articulations have a strong focus on rhythm and synchronicity, taking advantage of Kontakt’s Time Machine Pro feature.
