Multi layered sampling in 24 bits using highest quality preamps with ultra low noise gave it a super realistic sound. In this plugin the zanza do have resonant box as opposed to kalimba which does not. Also zanza has the buzzing piece of sheet metal on every playing rod. This creates subtle, high pitched buzzing. The kalimba has more mellow and clean sounds and they complement each other perfectly together.
The Kalimba is a modernized version of the ancient African Mbira, also often called a thumb piano. It has a humble, melodious percussive plucking sound with a marimba-like warmth and tonal body. It is often used in conjunction with pianos and other tuned percussion instruments to add a sharper attack and playfulness to the sound. Our instruments were made of wood and coconut shell, with hammered steel tines suspended over their sound holes. The notes span about an octave and a half for the smaller of our two instruments and over two octaves for the larger kalimba. We recorded kalimbas in 3 different environments: Close and Dry in our studio; at medium distance in a small bright chamber; and in a large, long linear hall, at both close (1 meter) and far (15 meters) microphone distances. We call our long hall “The Bunker”, because that’s exactly what it really is – a deep underground World War 1-era artillery bunker. It’s one of our favorite secret locations, used for some parts of the Rust 2 library and several other instruments in our collection. The dry recording was done with a stereo pair of large-diaphragm condensers at 2 inches away in a very dry space. You’ll hear a little bit of wood scuffing and creaking. We think those elements help to give the instruments a truer life-like sound and feel.

Rumba Box is a name used in the English-speaking Caribbean for bass kalimba. Typically the player sits on the box, reaching down between his legs to pluck the tines. Most are chromatic, with tines made of spring-tempered steel rods or bars. Some tines have been reshaped to adjust the tuning of the most prominent overtone relative to the fundamental, making a more coherent tone quality. Some have rattles on the tines. The rattles bring out the re-tuned overtone and give a distinctive edge to the tone. Rumba Box includes plucks, picks, and percussion.
Kalimba – also known as mbira or thumb piano, this instrument has its roots in African music with ethnomusicologist Hugh Tracey bringing the instrument to countries abroad in the 20th Century. To add a unique and modern twist we sampled a Hugh Tracey kalimba with nail (performing in a more traditional style where the nail is used on the metal tongues), finger (where the finger tip is used excluding nail, a slightly softer attack is obtained) and the incredible sound of the Kalimba played with a rubber. This results in a soft, rounded sound that works wonderfully with the earthly ring create when performing the instrument. All these samples were then used to create mini performances through a chain of out-board gear to create Moods, consisting of microloops, textures and sonic oddities that add a wealth of potential for the user to create unique sounds and soundscapes.
