Emulator X3 Software Sampler is the culmination of over 30 years of sampler development that offers the sound quality, synthesis and filters of E-MU’s hardware samplers and introduces a host of new tools that includes SynthSwipe automated hardware sampling, TwistaLoop non-destructive audio manipulator, Morph Filter Designer to create custom filters, Multi-Function Generator for advanced LFO/envelope/arpeggiator programming, advanced Transform Multiply convolution DSP tool, real-time control of multiple loop points, REX2 and MP3 import, and much more. Emulator X2 still offers E-MU’s 24-bit/192kHz sound engine and patented pitch interpolation, and can be run either standalone (64 MIDI channels) or as a VST instrument (16 MIDI channels per instantiation). Emulator X2 runs on Windows XP and includes over 3GB of sounds and a 2in/2out USB MIDI interface.

When I first heard the Proteus/1 I was blown away by its internal demo song. The strings sounded so real to me, one could hear the rosin on the bow and the friction of it on the strings of the violins. One of the peculiar things about the Proteus is the fact that many patches seem to emulate Roland D-50 patches, but not Korg M1 patches.. Both instruments were the instruments “to beat” at the time. I wonder why the programmers only focused on the D-50 and didn’t give the M1 sounds a shot.

The Audity 2000 takes its name from the classic and one-and-only Audity, but that’s about it. Although, the Audity 2000 has the same synthesis architecture as the Proteus, and the Proteus’s synth chips were designed with the original Audity in mind. The Audity 2000 is a digital synth with an unprecedented 16 simultaneous arpeggiators. That’s great for trance and techno! With an emphasis on electronic groove music, the Audity 2000 offers up many dance type sounds but with an uncomfortable digital “tinny” overtone. Its 12-pole digital resonant filter is nice…but it’s no Moog.
