FM is a beast to get to grips with.. but here Matt lays down the foundations by giving us a bit of background history on the technology before covering all the most common parameters and functions of FM and finishing with some sound design examples. Using Ableton Live’s Operator, all of the learning outcomes and core concepts in this course can be easily applied to any modern FM synth such as FM8, FL’s Sytrus and even Logic’s basic EFM1 or Retro synths. Well explained and easy to understand, after this FM shouldn’t be that scary thing you shy away from anymore, but a major weapon you can now add to your production arsenal. The beauty of FM synthesis of Z3TA+2 has reborn with FM Z3TA+2. There are some patches using Waveshaping, RM, PM and mixture of different synthesis, but most of them are frequency modulated! 139 presets for Cakewalk Z3TA+2 Arp(8), Bass(11), FX1(20), FX2(35), Lead(19), Pluck(19), Polyphonic(18), Wobble(9).
The main bulk of this set ranges from nice compression with tone shaping, to effects where nasty growling distortions are possible (and many can do both). Throw in some oddball robotic ringing effects, and you have a sonic arsenal. Tube FM 4 is a good choice if you need something a little different, from unique dynamic control to total sonic destruction. These effects can be used in many different situations (almost a year after release and some users have reported to me that they are still finding new uses), and each effect can give a wide range of results depending on how they are tweaked. Nebula 3 pro or better is needed for these to work as intended.
The DX7 and FM synthesis – in their days – opened up a new horizon. Together with subtractive synthesis and sampling technology, FM was the most important development in synthesizer history. Neither VCO nor VCA that came with analogue machines provided comparable results. In 1983 when everyone seemed to own a Yamaha DX7, Frequency Modulation, as a concept, was the next step, redefined what a synthesizer could sound like, redefined the whole synthesizer market.
