The main bulk of this set ranges from nice compression with tone shaping, to effects where nasty growling distortions are possible (and many can do both). Throw in some oddball robotic ringing effects, and you have a sonic arsenal. Tube FM 4 is a good choice if you need something a little different, from unique dynamic control to total sonic destruction. These effects can be used in many different situations (almost a year after release and some users have reported to me that they are still finding new uses), and each effect can give a wide range of results depending on how they are tweaked. Nebula 3 pro or better is needed for these to work as intended.

The DX7 and FM synthesis – in their days – opened up a new horizon. Together with subtractive synthesis and sampling technology, FM was the most important development in synthesizer history. Neither VCO nor VCA that came with analogue machines provided comparable results. In 1983 when everyone seemed to own a Yamaha DX7, Frequency Modulation, as a concept, was the next step, redefined what a synthesizer could sound like, redefined the whole synthesizer market.

Wafeformless has released FM Artifact, a free sample pack containing a selection of sounds which were synthesized with the FM8 synthesizer by Native Instruments.

Today’s free sampled instrument is a metallic bass/lead from Native Instruments’ FM8.

FM Artifact is available for free download via Waveformless (1.74 MB download size, contains 6 audio samples in 24-bit WAV format).
The samples were crafted using the FM8 synthesizer, which is one of the best virtual FM synths around. You can grab it for $199 at Native Instruments. For a freeware alternative (to an extent), grab the FMMF synth by de la Mancha.
