This month’s Electronic Sound cover star is sci-fi electronica legend and space boffin JEFF MILLS, whose many career highs include an acclaimed series of radio shows for NASA. From co-founding the fearsome Underground Resistance in Detroit in 1989 to beaming out epic transmissions via his long-running Axis label, Mills has spent decades crafting his singular vision of electronic music, taking in alien soundscapes, cosmic operas, symphonic collaborations and more. As well as delving into his huge back catalogue, our interview with this sonic adventurer and edgy futurist covers subjects such as Marvel comics, 1920s movies, black holes, technology, telepathy, and the similarities between musicians and astrophysicists. It’s a gripping read, as you’d expect from a man with one foot in tomorrow and the other somewhere near Alpha Centauri.

Never mind the moonshot, we’re off to a far-flung galaxy with HANNAH PEEL – synthesist, composer, space geek and this month’s Electronic Sound cover star. We have a tasty orange vinyl seven-inch featuring two great tracks from Hannah’s forthcoming collaborative album with virtuoso percussionist Beibei Wang to accompany the magazine too. We’ve been charting the rise of Hannah Peel for more than a decade, but she’s shifted into another gear entirely in recent times – topping charts, winning awards and working with everyone from John Foxx to chamber music ensembles – and our cover story looks ahead to what could be her biggest year yet. She has a raft of exciting and ambitious projects coming up, including the imminent release of ’The Endless Dance’, a wonderful exploration of sound recorded with Beibei Wang. Incorporating ancient tonal chimes and futuristic psychedelic grooves, the album combines Hannah’s vocals, synths and piano with Beibei’s textured percussion to forge a bold new musical language.

We’re marking the return of The Art Of Noise with this month’s Electronic Sound cover story. Or The Art Of This as they’re now calling themselves. And as well as bringing you the very first interview with the band under this name, we’re bundling the magazine with an exclusive silver vinyl seven-inch featuring the new group’s debut recordings. More than 25 years on from The Art Of Noise’s last studio album, three of the five founding members – JJ Jeczalik, Gary Langan and Paul Morley – are rebooting the group as The Art Of This. They’re in fantastic form for our interview, telling tales from their early days and talking about going back to their avant-garde roots. They discuss Morley’s manifesto for the rejuvenated unit, which also includes former ZZT label manager Ian Peel, and describe themselves as “a sequel” to the original group. They claim there is another offshoot too, The Art Of That, which they say they’ll use “in shadowy ways”. True to form for the oddball electronic maestros, you should expect the unexpected.

This month’s Electronic Sound cover stars are the fabled White Noise – Delia Derbyshire, Brian Hodgson and David Vorhaus – and we’re bundling the magazine with a fantastic seven-inch featuring previously unreleased Radiophonic Workshop remixes of two killer tracks by the pioneering electronic supergroup. Radiophonic stalwarts Derbyshire and Hodgson formed White Noise with offbeat American musician Vorhaus in 1968. We’ve interviewed the band’s two surviving members for our cover feature, which is the story of their witchy and wonderful ‘An Electric Storm’ album. It’s an entertaining tale, with lots of strange twists and turns. Lots of sex and drugs as well. White Noise used reel-to-reel tapes and an early VCS 3 on the album, but it doesn’t sound the least bit dated. And while it wasn’t a commercial success on its release in 1969, it’s become hugely influential in the decades since, inspiring sonic adventurers like Throbbing Gristle, Aphex Twin, Broadcast and more.

We’re walking the dark and gritty streets of post-punk Sheffield for this month’s Electronic Sound cover feature detailing the formative years of CLOCK DVA. We’re bundling the magazine with a truly fantastic seven-inch from the electro-industrial agitators too. Our story starts with Clock DVA main man Adi Newton in a band called The Future, alongside soon-to-be members of The Human League. Once Newton got DVA rolling, his new group forged close associations with Cabaret Voltaire and Throbbing Gristle, quickly matching TG’s reputation for fearsome live sets. By the time they’d played three gigs, they’d been banned from three venues. The focus of our piece is on the first two DVA albums – released in late 1980 and early 1981– with fights, drugs, porn, constructivism, cricket, a missing person and a tragic death all part of the saga. It really is a rollercoaster read.
