Darbuka is a VSTi plug-in featuring a complete Arabic and Middle Eastern percussion group with a surround stage and unrivalled real-time control over arrangement and sound. Darbuka is neither a sample library nor another product based on a standard sample player. These are real performances played by world-renowned percussionists Suat Borazan and Mohamed Zaki. Wizoo’s proprietary FlexGroove engine adds full real-time control over arrangement, performance, sound and integrated surround ambience. The integrated mixer includes independent EQ, punch, and ambience adjustment for each instrument. Place instruments freely in one of 15 different surround stages and play patterns, fills, solos, variations and mutes via MIDI keys. Darbuka is the most musical way to bring ethnic percussion from North Africa and the Middle East to your tracks.

Wizoo LoFi Junkiez Vol.2

LoFi Junkiez is the first of Wizoo’s ‘TrashCan’ loops series. Based on lower bit sample, old drum machines and hard compression, they make a great starting point. I picked this disc up from the manufacturer several months ago hoping to be ecstatic about it, but ultimately becoming bored with most of the offerings. There just isn’t enough to keep one occupied. Described as Big Beat and Break Beat drum loops ‘Totally phucked up but phunk.eee’. LoFi Junkiez is mixed Wav/AIFF disc with both Stereo and Mono variations focusing on the Cologne techno stylings. The loops have a lot of energy and are pretty authentic, but you have your work cut out for you if ya don’t want to sound like everyone else. This disc is rather limited in scope. This may be both a godsend with all the discs trying to be everything for everyone, or a disappointment because there just isn’t enough here. The loops are presented in several formats, but ultimately, you will be looking at about 50 megs of information total with 90 loops for the most part, grouped into 24 variations on a theme with 18 free standing loops.

Wizoo Powered Nord is from the German company Wizoo, who are probably better known for their music books, mainly Software and Synth Guides, but have now developed a rapidly expanding range of sample CD’s. The advertising for this CD states “This hot tamale makes other digital takes on analog sounds look like refried beans. Watch your sampler sweat when you feed it these killer sounds. Burning basses, red-hot pads, scorching leads, pyro polys and sizzling syncs. This CD-ROM turns your sampler or soundcard into a virtual Nord Lead with 64 patches.”  As with other Wizoo sample CD’s this collection sits in the “midrange” price bracket of just under $50, around half the price of what we’d call a full price CD. Logically therefore you get around half the contents of what you might expect from a full price CD, although in this case you do get a fair amount of material part of this is due to the duplication of samples as we’ll explain later… The CD comes in a gatefold “CD single” cardboard type package that opens up to reveal a booklet in the inside cover, very nice, though be careful not to stick your cup of tea on it as it’s not quite as “wipe clean” as your typical plastic case.
