We’re investigating the visual art of John Foxx in this month’s Electronic Sound. While he is best known as the frontman of Ultravox and a revered solo musician in his own right, Foxx is also a highly distinctive visual artist. He has worked in photography, collage, graphic art and other media since the mid-1970s, and his extraordinary portfolio is detailed in a forthcoming book called ‘Electricity And Ghosts’. We’ve invited him to talk about some of his favourite pieces from the book, and the result is a fascinating glimpse into his artistic approach and the aesthetic principles he applies to both his imagery and his records. You could describe it as a sort of synthesis of John Foxx. We have a bumper selection of other great interviews elsewhere in this issue too, including Jeff Mills, John Grant, Suzanne Ciani, Orbital, Wolfgang Tillmans, Low End Activist, Keeley Forsyth and Chanel Beads. This month’s Electronic Sound cover stars are the effortlessly sublime Air, who are currently on an extensive world tour to promote the deluxe edition of their landmark 1998 album ‘Moon Safari’. Performing inside a huge glass box that looks like something out of Stanley Kubrick’s ‘2001: A Space Odyssey’, Jean-Benoît Dunckel and Nicolas Godin are playing the album live and in full for the first time – and the result is a major triumph. The French duo speak about the gorgeously languid and exquisitely produced ‘Moon Safari’ in our cover feature, as we assess the influence of a record that hit double platinum sales in the UK and remains an electronic masterpiece to this day. With big bells on.

Auch wenn der Herbst momentan eher grausuppig aus der Terrine schaut – professional audio enthält viele Themen, mit denen sich Oktober und November vergolden lassen. Endlich konnten wir eines der wenigen Testexemplare des heiß begehrten Brick Lane von Cranborne Audio ergattern. Unser besonders umfangreicher Referenztest beantwortet alle Fragen zu Technik und Klangpotential des Hardware-Kompressors. Im klanglichen Fahrwasser zweier Neumann-Legenden will das United UT Twin48 reisen – und wir haben uns das Röhrenmikrofon aus Baton Rouge ganz genau angesehen und angehört. Die sensiblen Ohren waren auch zu spitzen im Falle des Edel-Kopfhörers Audeze CRNB2, der neue Maßstäbe im vornehmen Elektrostaten-Club setzen könnte. Doch Tests alleine machen die neue Ausgabe noch nicht höchst lesenswert. Ein Top-Beiträg ist definitiv der neue Workshop von Diplom-Tonmeisterin Carina Pannicke, die offenbart, wie ihr euren Mischungen Mehrdimensionalität verleiht. Schließlich plaudert auch noch der von internationalen Künstlern hochgeschätzte Musikproduzent Patrick W. Engel im Exklusivinterview aus dem Nähkästchen.
