    The Forcalquier Organ Model V.2

    (1627-2000) Hauptwerk WAV

The history of the organ in the church of Forcalquier is very turbulent and only a part of the material remained from the baroque period, from the original organ. Most of it comes from a 19th and 20th century restorations. The cathedral in a small and picturesque French city called Forcalquier had a small organ with 9 stops built by Pierre Marchand in 1627. It is said that during the time of the Revolution, the church and the organ served for the embellishments of the feasts of the new regime. In 1803, the Christian worship was restored in the church. Half a century later, Prosper Antoine Moitessier rebuilt the organ completely, reusing also the ancient material. The Grand orgue had now 22 stops, a Récit expressif (enclosed in a swell-box) and Pedal with 4 stops. The organbuilders Cavaillé-Coll – Mutin made further reconstruction in 1932. They extended the pedal board range and changed the action to the pneumatic one.

Two manual cembalo was built after the 1624 Johannes Ruckers model, which is kept in Musée Unterlinden (formerly belonged to the family de Sade and was kept at the Chateau de Conde, Condé-en-Brie). The Flemish cembalo is solid in construction, colorful in tone with a rich resonance. The Flemish makers were apparently the first to build two-manual harpsichords after 1600. The workshop of Ruckers is credited to build probably the most perfect harpsichords ever and it sets the benchmark for harpsichordists and harpsichord makers even today.

The Model D grand piano was sampled from a Hamburg-made 1939 Steinway D274 grand coda piano. This particular piano has been in use in various venues in Italy and has been played and praised by many top-level international classical and jazz players. This piano’s age definitely guarantees it the vintage moniker, nonetheless it went through proper maintenance and restoration over the years by highly-skilled italian technicians. It totally resonates with all of the great music played through it. We sampled this piece of history in a medium-size hall surrounded by a plethora of microphones.

Sampled from a Yamaha CP80 compact electric grand, the Model 80 is a work of love and an homage to the sound that defined an era. The electric piano was properly restored and tuned before being sampled. Special care was taken in recreating the characteristic edgy sound of the middle registers, the shallow tone of the lows and the stingy highs.

The aim of the project is to make the concert organ from Litomysl (Grygar, 2001) available for the Hauptwerk software sampler. This modern organ is large enough (4 manuals + pedal, 51 sounding stops) to fit the needs of any organ music style, early Spanish music, French or German romantic music, German baroque, XXth century music or anything else you can imagine. The organ was sampled very accurately on 1:1 basis using professional digital equipment of the 24bit/48kHz resolution. The stereo O.R.T.F. norm was used as the recording technique. Each tone of each stop has been captured several times to assure the best possible results. Long samples up to 9 seconds were taken.
