The recording process is a fantastic audio journey. It’s guided by the audio engineer who nurtures a sound from its acoustic inception, emanating from the musician’s instrument as it travels through the air… to the proper microphone placed in an exact position… through the cable to the chosen pre-amp… then into the dynamics processors… through the mixing console’s channel strip where it gets sculpted and shaped and given perspective… until it finally meets up with the other sounds whose journeys have followed completely different paths to the final mix.
In this course you’ll learn how to get the most out of Apple Music. We’ll help you get your Apple Music account set up, then you’ll learn how to search for new music, set up playlists of your favorite tracks, listen to curated lists and even watch videos. This is an introduction to Apple Music and is designed to get you started in an hour. As you watch this course we encourage you to follow along on your iPhone or iPad and complete the steps as we go through them. Once you finish the course you’ll have a solid understanding of how Apple Music works, and how to get the most out of it.
Every day around the world, billions of people listen to music of one sort or another, and millions listen to Western classical music. Why do we do it? Because it’s fun? Because it energizes or relaxes us? Because it keeps us current, allows us to understand what’s happening in past and popular culture? The pull of music–especially classical music—has never been explained. The aim of this course is to do just that: To explicate the mysteries and beauties of some of Western cultures greatest musical compositions—among them masterpieces of Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, Wagner, and Puccini. We begin with the elements of music, breaking classical musical into its components of pitch, duration, and sound color, allowing us to better understand how music works. Next, we proceed to the compositions themselves, starting with the Middle Ages and Renaissance, to show how Western music developed in ways unique to the West. Ultimately, we reach the masters, commencing with Bach. What makes his music great? Why does it move us? What should we listen for? And so we proceed down through Western musical history, visiting virtually the people who created it and the places where they did so. By the end, we hope all of us have become more human (enriched our personalities) and had a rollicking good time!
In the past, Digital Audio Workstations (DAWs) were programs used only by audio engineers with a highly specific knowledge base, on machines inaccessible to most people. But over the past 10-15 years, DAWs and the act of recording music have evolved from being a luxury of the few to being available to the masses. Ableton Live is one such application. Used by an extremely broad range of music creators, Ableton Live not only facilitates the work of engineers, producers, and writers in professional, home, and mobile studio settings, but it is also a powerful platform for musicians on stage, in the DJ booth, and elsewhere. In this course, you will explore some of Live’s most powerful and useful functionality: MIDI programming, audio recording, warping and processing, looping editing, mixing, performing, file management, and troubleshooting. Meant to be a springboard for those who are new to Ableton Live and/or DAWs in general, this three-week course will provide you with a strong knowledge base for using Live to take your musical ideas from conception to final recording. The course breaks down the many barriers of entry into music technology and encourages all those who wish, to create fearlessly.
