Ambi Head is a professional plugin for converting ambisonic signals into 3D binaural audio. It allows manipulations of 3D scenes (rotations and control of spatial width) and contains HRTF filters specifically designed for immersive listening and accurate reproduction of B-format signals. Custom HRTF filters can be loaded via the integrated SOFA importer, letting users choose “custom heads” for personalized binaural rendering. The data in the download version has been reduced to 20-bit audio, whereas the boxed version contains 24-bit audio. The download version is only supported on Windows 7 and Mac OSX 10.5.8 or later, and is only compatible with Intel processors on Mac. How large is the download version? The download size is approx 14GB – this is uncompressed during installation resulting in a maximum installed size of approx 52GB. Why has the data been reduced to 20-bit for the download version? 20-bit audio offers a dynamic range of around 120dB. This is greater than the dynamic range of most professional-grade preamps/A-D converters, so there is no perceptible loss of audio quality. Any noise introduced due to the bit-reduction process is well below the analogue noise floor inherent in the recordings, and leads to much smaller downloads.

Harpsichords are a form of keyboard instrument with a history as far back as the Renaissance, predating the modern piano by several hundred years. The only problem with the design of the harpsichord was that it lacks the ability to create dynamics naturally. Instead, different stops must be used to achieve different timbres and volumes, like on organs. This particular harpsichord is a hand-built modern replica based on designs from the Baroque period and features two different stops.

The ear-ringing (not bell-ringing) descendant of the carillon is the not-very-intimidating-looking Glockenspiel. However, one must beware its ability to surpass even the piccolo in pain due to high notes. Our glock is slightly more on the mellow side, but, recorded up close, provides a great rich fill of the harmonics, not to mention a lovely quiet end for those cute songs about winter and snow fall when a celeste just won’t do. Unlike most sampled glocks, you get to hear the full natural impact of the mallet and get a full range of dynamics. If you don’t like the impact, just add a high-pass filter, we won’t mind.
