There’s only one Kaya… literally. S. Husky Hoskulds made it by taking an old Ampex tube tape deck and hardwiring the preamp directly to the tape head. He calls his unit ‘Pa’, a minimal box with swampy distortion and a very heavy bottom. I started with Pa’s dirt, then added controls to make it more flexible. An assymetric Treble control can rebalance the sound towards the top, or tilt it down into murky darkness. An Abuse knob does exactly what you’d expect it to do. Blend allows you to tuck in the overall effect for subtler applications. What I love about Kaya is it never harshes out, it’s always warm even when it’s gone nuclear. A one-trick pony, but what a trick it is.

There seem to be two types of mix engineers: those who own a pair of the original units this plug is inspired by, and those who want to. I can’t give you the original, but I can give you my twisted take on it. For starters, I tweaked the distortions to make them fuzzier, because I have a fondness for dirt & grime. I added a 250Hz sidechain HPF option which leaves all bass frequencies uncompressed, as well as a 6kHz sidechain ‘push’ to smooth out harsh, aggressive stuff. Most compressors press sounds back, this one pushes them forward. The original is in every million dollar studio, now my version can be in yours

Mark 73 Electric Piano was sampled from a 1976 Rhodes Mark I Stage Piano. The entire keyboard was wrapped in tinfoil, which virtually eliminated EMI noise. The piano was sampled DI through a Radial Pro 48 DI box, and the signal was routed to a Fender Deluxe Reverb amp, recorded relatively clean through an AEA R84 Ribbon Mic and AEA TRP Preamp. Each note of the 73 note of the Rhodes Piano was sampled 3 times at 10 velocity layers. Releases where sampled for the DI signal as well as the amped signal, but the amp release notes sounded a bit out of place, so the decision was made to only include DI releases. The sound of the amp can be heard in the amp samples, as a Fender Reverb Deluxe is a noisy amp, even without a signal. The DI samples are relatively clean by comparison.

DNX-03 is a three-band stereo Compressor (win vst plugin) inspired by the analog models, with some added features such as noise reduction and wide stereo control for each individual freq-band. The DNX-03 is able to split the incoming signal into three frequency-bands using a 6dB per octave crossover. First-order filters are considered by many audiophiles to be ideal for crossovers. Each band is passed through a compressor and then through a stereo processor where compression,gain and stereo image can be altered and improved. The outputs of the compressors and processors are then re-combined and fed to the master output.

Matrix – The Voice Coder is “The Vocoder for the 21st century”.

The Vocoder was invented by Homer Dudley in the mid-30’s of the last century. Dudley worked at Bell Laboratories, and this is where the first Vocoder took shape. The basic function of a Vocoder is characterized by an analysis of the input signal, usually speech but other type of inputs can also be very interesting. In a special filter bank, a spectral analysis is performed and signals are developed which follows the amount of spectral energy in each channel. Another part of the analyzer tests if there are unvoiced or voiced sounds at any particular time and extracts the pitch of the voiced sounds. The output section of the vocoder consists of a stereophonic synthesis filter bank which assembles the new synthetic speech from the characteristic filter envelopes from the analysis stage together with an external or internal replacement signal.
