GSi Solo Trumpet is a physical modeling emulation of a trumpet. This is a chapter GSi started a long time ago with one of the first plugins released to the public, then it evolved in a renovated emulation featured in the GSi Gemini, and now is here again with a new plugin. Unlike other similar approaches to a digital recreation of a wind instrument, GSi Solo Trumpet is not meant to be necessarily controlled with a breath control or any other kind of expression controller. It can still be controlled from Midi CC messages and Channel Aftertouch, but its main purpose is to be played on a keyboard in a very natural way without being distracted by extra controllers. Solo Trumpet continuously analyzes the playing style, the use of velocity, staccato and legato, note distance and other elements in order to articulate the sound in a way that it sounds and plays natural and realistic. Features such as auto-bending, auto-vibrato and automatic expression are the key to a satisfying result and make Solo Trumpet a fun instrument to play.

TimeVerb-X is a new plugin from GSi that combines GSi’s “classic” Type4 spring reverb, first released in 2008, and a new algorithmic digital reverb. The “Type4” spring reverb emulation was originally inspired by an Accutronics reverb tank type 4, like those used in classic Hammond organs of the A100 series, also used in many famous electric guitar amplifiers. The digital reverb, instead, was first developed for the GSi Gemini sound module, but was also included in some Crumar hardware instruments. Both effects have been slightly expanded and further improved for the release of TimeVerb-X, as the spring reverb now features a self-oscillating feedback decay adjustment and a stereo width knob, and the digital reverb includes the early reflections section that was missing in the original project. Both reverbs put together make up a great sound when working in parallel, and create some interesting atmospheres when working in serial.

INSTRUMENT BACKGROUND. Among the many transistor organs of the past, also known as “Combo Organs” (mostly because some of them also had a rhythm section and built-in speakers), the Farfisa Compact DeLuxe, along with its big brother the Compact Duo, was one of the most used organs at least in the european beat scene of the early and mid seventies. The electronic circuit of this kind of organ is relatively simple, at least on paper: rather than using a mechanical tone generator like the tonewheel models (Hammond and Pari), the transistor organs used a circuit called “Top Octave Synthesizer”, TOS for short, responsible of the generation of 12 waveforms, one for each note of the last octave of the organ keyboard. The basic waveform was usually something halfway between a ramp and a triangular. The lower octaves were produced by means of “divider” circuits that could halve the frequency of each waveform, going so forth for each lower octave down to the pedalboard tones. At each division, something was lost and something was gained in terms of harmonic content. The result was that the same notes of different octaves had oscillators perfectly in sync, so all C notes were in sync, all C#, all D and so on. This same technique was also used in so-called “string machines” or “stringer keyboards” that emulated orchestral sounds (violins, trumpets, etc.).

GSi Drum-80 reproduces that exact scenario. It contains two separate sound engines that can play at the same time. One engine recreates the sounds of the famous electronic drum module known as the Simmons SDS-V (very similar to the later SDS-8 model); at the same time, the exclusive GSi WLF Engine plays a multi-sample of real cymbals recorded exclusively for Drum-80. We all know and use electronic drums today, but at the beginning of the 80’s the first electronic drums were a real novelty that revolutionized not only the sound of music of those years, but also the workflow in the recording studio. Many producers preferred to record the sound of electronic drums rather than acoustic drums because it saved time and money, avoiding having to mount microphones, find the right positions, spend hours equalizing and correcting the recorded material. With an electronic drum set it was quicker: it was enough to connect the cables and maybe find the right sound for the song, which was a perfect scenario especially for many low-cost productions, for example those of pop music.

GSi ECHO B2 is the digital recreation of a particular unit of Binson Echorec B2 mod. T5E from 1965. This unit, despite being so old, still has its original tubes and has had very little service in the last 30 years. We don’t know how this unit sounded when it was new, but this is how it sounds today, in 2022. It has to be said that the Echorec B2, despite being less famous than its big brother the Echorec 2, shares with it the same magnetic drum, the same magnetic heads, same mechanism and pretty much the same circuitry, practically the same sound in a more compact unit. There are several sources of information about vintage Echorecs, this is the Echorec Bible. The plugin features all controls found on the original unit, plus 4 extra knobs for adjusting the alignment of each head (aka Azimuth on tape machines), one extra knob to slow down the drum motor up to half the normal speed (to obtain doubled delay times) and one last knob to adjust the level of audible circuit hiss.

EQuity is a six band visual equalizer with precise meterings, featuring a frequency analyzer and an IR-based preamp section. It was initially conceived as a simple EQ module to be incorporated in other audio products, then the visual EQ section and the spectrum analyzer were added. It represents an inexpensinve solution for DAWs and other audio environments where the use of a visual equalizer comes handy. The low CPU power requirement makes it perfect for being run in multiple instances on complex mixes.
