Antique and old junk shops can be great places to rummage round in, especially the little back street ones run by some eccentric, doddery old bloke in a waistcoat and bow tie. There are loads of them in Britain and our intrepid explorers are never far from one, stumbling across little gems for ‘re-purposing’. And they have found a real belter in the latest. At first, it was thought it was some peculiar radio/TV hybrid … or some old piece of radar equipment. You can imagine our surprise, then, when it was cleaned up, powered up and it started generating bizarre and unusual string and pad sounds coming at us over the decades and reminiscent of the scratchy, crusty soundtracks heard in old black and white movies. It has two layers, BODY and AIR so named because one provides the foundation of the sound while the other provides a lighter component. Each section has three basic sounds which can be tuned, mixed, have vibrato added and shaped and filtered – BODY uses a simple lowpass filter while AIR features a highpass filter to make that section more ‘wispy’.

Our intrepid explorers have done it again!

They have returned to HS Towers, tired and weary, khakis ripped and pith helmets slightly the worse for wear, from an arduous expedition in the far east. There, they discovered an ancient machine buried deep in a derelict temple in the Kunlun mountain range of the Tibetan plateau. This immediately proved ideal to re-purpose for Matthias Schuster’s Tibetan bowl samples. With 61 different bowl samples of varying kinds and sizes and made of copper and bronze, there is a remarkable amount of tonality in their own right. However, each one is individually editable with each sample able to be tuned and EQ’s and filtered by the multi-mode filter and shaped by two envelopes as well as modulated by an LFO and and envelope. Distortion and bit crunching round off the sonic processing for each of the samples before being passed to the multi-effects…

Using battered casework and components we salvaged from old Soviet Union submarine radio equipment that was languishing and due for cruel and ruthless de-commisioning, Techtron brings thoroughly modern sounds in re-purposed retro style. With two ‘super’ oscillators featuring thick, detuned sawtooths (which we call ‘iSaw’ here at HS Towers and come courtesy of HS chum, BeMuso) through a multimode, dual slope filter, two envelopes, two LFOs, a pitch EG, mono and poly playback modes with glide, etc., Techtron offers instant ‘techno’ sounds that are powerful, wide, bright, brash, fizzy and anthemic and yet also capable of chunky basses, spiky arpeggios, thick leadlines and lush, luxuriously smooth pads plus dark, broody and moody textures. The Shell is a unique thing in that it’s an empty Kontakt instrument which allows YOU to put YOUR samples into it and have a fully functional, professionally scripted and designed panel at your disposal for sonic tweakage. Ideal if you make your own samples/sounds but aren’t able to do scripting or find it difficult. Scripting IS very complicated if you’re not that way inclined … like myself … which is why we have our own resident scriptmeister in the form of the enviably gifted Mario Krušelj here at HS Towers. Let’s face it, Kontakt scripting can be very complicated even if you ARE that way inclined!
