BFD Oblivion is an expansion for BFD3, BFD Eco and BFD2 designed to provide ready-to-use heavy rock and metal drum sounds. The included sounds are inspired by genres like post-metal, sludge, prog-metal and alt-rock and are intended to have the punch to slice through the densest walls of guitars. Based around 3 different versions of a Mapex Orion kit with Mapex brass and Brady jarrah wood snares, each with different degrees of processing, BFD Oblivion also contains cymbals from Bosphorus, Zildjian and Paiste in natural and processed versions. Crafted by an in-house team obsessed with metal, BFD Oblivion is processed heavily so you don’t have to – just add your hardest guitars and basses to create an authentic foundation for all kinds of rock and metal music.
BFD Percussion is an add-on expansion which adds an extensive suite of detailed percussion instruments to the drums in your BFD3, BFD2 or BFD Eco installation. Its sounds cover latin, world and kit-centric percussion as well as outlandishly strange junk percussion and kitchenware. Amongst the highlights are congas, bongos, timbales, djembes, darbukas, udu, ashiko, bodhran, chimes, triangles, shakers and tambourines, alongside esoteric effect sounds like thundersheets, waterphones and bowed gongs. The grotesquely beautiful junk percussion range includes trashcans, saw blades, saucepans and other intriguing household objects. In fact, BFD Percussion literally contains the kitchen sink – in full multi-sampled, multi-articulated form! BFD Percussion is produced by the team that brought you BFD Jazz & Funk Collection, and tracked in stunning detail in an intimate room for a tight, controlled sound. As always, carefully-selected high-end mics, preamps and converters were used to capture the musicality, lush ambience, expressive depth and dynamic scope of these eclectic instruments, which are perfect for use in all styles of music. The collection also comes with a bonus set of percussion Groove performances.
Combining the emotions, grandeur and mystery of Kabuki and Noh performances with the reverberations of tapped hand drums, Kabuki & Noh Percussion features 56 authentic Japanese percussion instruments including traditional hand drums, pitched drums, bells, gongs and music boxes alongside Noh flute and authentic vocal motifs. Also included are the ashibyoshi foot beats and tsukeuchi sound-effect clappers crucial to Kabuki performance. The instruments are played by master traditional Japanese percussionist Takinojo Mochizuki with alternating left/right hits and up to 99 velocity layers.
There seem to be two types of mix engineers: those who own a pair of the original units this plug is inspired by, and those who want to. I can’t give you the original, but I can give you my twisted take on it. For starters, I tweaked the distortions to make them fuzzier, because I have a fondness for dirt & grime. I added a 250Hz sidechain HPF option which leaves all bass frequencies uncompressed, as well as a 6kHz sidechain ‘push’ to smooth out harsh, aggressive stuff. Most compressors press sounds back, this one pushes them forward. The original is in every million dollar studio, now my version can be in yours
BFD JEX is an expansion for BFD3, BFD Eco and BFD2 featuring a high-end, custom hand-made kit from XDrum’s Xotica line. The included drums possess 6-ply Keller Maple shells with an additional ply of Sapeli Pommele running vertically resulting in focused low-end. The finish is hand-applied tung oil which offers a very open tone. The package also includes a bonus Ludwig snare taken from BFD Jazz & Funk Collection. BFD JEX is recorded in the same room and studio conditions as the BFD Jazz & Funk and BFD Percussion expansions as well as those used for the Mapleworks kits in BFD3.
BFD Jazz Maple is an expansion for BFD3, BFD Eco and BFD2 which combines an immaculately recorded Yamaha Maple Custom drumkit with a set of artist presets and bonus jazz Grooves. Centred around a kit with 2 kicks and 3 toms full of classic maple warmth and sustain, BFD Jazz Maple also includes a bonus reduced-detail snare (taken from BFD Signature Snares Vol.1) and Sabian cymbals (from BFD Jazz & Funk Collection) which are recorded in similar studio conditions. Although the included kit’s tone is particularly suited to jazz, fusion and funk, it’s great for any other musical styles that need expressive and great-sounding drums. BFD Jazz Maple comes complete with a set of 5 Groove palettes from Platinum Samples’ Real Jazz MIDI collection.
