Organ pipes are made from either wood or metal and produce sound when air under pressure (“wind”) is directed through them. Pipes are arranged by timbre and pitch into ranks. A rank is a row of pipes mounted vertically onto a windchest. An organ contains two actions, or systems of moving parts. When a key is depressed, the key action admits wind into a pipe. The stop action allows the organist to control which ranks are engaged.

While many virtual models of organs have one specific instrument as the template, we decided to take different approach this time. The advantage of presenting a “South German Organ Model” without a direct connection to certain specific instrument is that it is more clearly shown that all the organs of this family in the given period are quite similar to each other and have many common characteristics, in spite of their differences. These common characteristics of the south German organ building school are: an instrument with two short-octave manuals where the Rückpositiv is shaped to be the “smaller brother” of the Hauptwerk for dynamic and spatial contrast; limited pedal division of 18 tones; mild Principals with an expressive speech even on very low wind pressures; sparkling and light sound of numerous mixtures which often include a tierce rank; great variety of flute stops including the typical wooden Copulas -thinner Gedackts- with non-imitable “chiff”; predominant labial character of the instrument accentuated by total absence of reed stops (with the exception of occasional Fagot-like pedal stop with wooden resonators), early appearance of strings. Anyway, it is good to point out at least two instruments which are probably the most excellent examples of the South German organ building school, milestones marking the boundaries of the given period.

The worldwide known instrument Kawai KG 2E recorded close mic. In fact, this piano sample set used to be a freebie but can’t be found anymore as far as I know. Still a nice one.

One might say to die for, but perhaps it would be more advisable to stick around and enjoy these first-rate sounds, created by the ex-bassist of Weather Report and an unnamed European orchestra. Digitally recorded in stereo throughout, the ensembles retain just the right amount of ‘hall’ in the sound. Expensive, but very good. The first version of this library had no loops, to the bemusement of keyboard players everywhere, but version 2.0 (reviewed here) contains looped sounds. However, Miroslav Vitous himself considers the unlooped samples superior in quality and strongly urge-using them for mastering, which is fine as long as your composition doesn’t employ any very long notes!

Starting from version 2.0, ADB stopped supplying 16bit samples and replaced them with 24bit only. In this instace, 24bit is a waste of space, since all samples are normalized and their noise level is far above -90dBFS. So I made myself this 16bit version and hopefully not just for myself. 16bit samples were taken from previous LASS release, compressed, converted and resaved for use with 2.0 patches. That alone took 18 hours since Kontakt file management engine is not optimized for multicore processors…
