The original KLEIN & HUMMEL UE-100® EQs are extremely rare and expensive. But Rafa Sardina – who has 12 Grammy wins and 35 nominations – owns 10 of them! What is so special about this weird and wonderful device? For some time, hardware equalizers had to each be developed with a specific purpose in mind, requiring engineers to combine different EQ types in one signal chain in order to achieve the frequency response they needed on any given source. They would have to accept the necessary evil of the resulting phase and intermodulation distortion when treating these sounds. When released in 1961, the Klein & Hummel UE-100 Universal Equalizer changed all that. This all-tube minimum phase EQ used six discrete filter modules to create a collection of band-pass filters that could create dynamic curves for any application from source mixing to vocal tracking to mastering. While some earlier UE-100s were used to transparently filter out junk low and high frequencies when printing to tape and vinyl, it quickly became commonplace to take advantage of the unique pushbutton frequency selection; this provided an easy way to not only recall settings, but also alter them on the fly while recording a performance. The UE-100 became known for its musically warm curves and precise response, offering a myriad of possibilities for treating frequencies by boosting and/or cutting across the spectrum to shape sounds “like a Pultec on steroids.”

    Timeless equalizers revitalized.

Fat, tube-driven, passive equalizers can be so much more than functional tools. They impart character and style to any source; drums, synths, vocals, guitars, strings, brass… you name it! As such, they’ve been sought after in top-of-the-line international studios for decades, and their sound enriches the textures of thousands of classic records, in every genre you can imagine. Now combined into a single plug-in, which not only improves the workflow but allows for a revitalized approach to the sonics using our latest digital signal processing technology, the Tube-Tech Equalizers Mk II are a huge step forward for an already phenomenal pair of processors.

The Tube-Tech PE 1C is a passive, tube-based equalizer suitable for many different sources ranging from bass drums and guitars to vocals. The equalizer features a Low Frequency section made up of two low shelf filters which can be combined to attenuate and boost at the same time. These filters are actually bit apart in frequency even if they are controlled by the same frequency selector. The High Frequency section has a peak and shelving filter working in parallel, which provides a smooth top end while not getting too bright. The ability to combine the different filters and sections is what gives the PE 1C its characteristic sound and is something which plays a crucial part in explaining the classic Pultec sound.

    FD1N and FD3N Tube EQ & Saturator plug-ins

While all three EQs / saturators look almost the same, aside from their colours, Babelson Audio says that they use different algorithms. The FD1N is nicknamed “British Edition”, while the FD3N carries the label “U.S.A. Edition”. It doesn’t appear that the EQs have been modeled after any specific British or American pieces of hardware…

Introducing Radiator, a dual drive tube input channel and EQ, based on the classic Altec 1567A tube mixer from the 1960s. The original Altec 1567A hardware was a rack-mounted five-input tube mixer with removable transformers, a simple two-knob EQ, an unmistakable green faceplate, and a whopping 97 dB of gain. The sound, by todays standards, is colored and gritty, with a heaping helping of good old fashion hardware noise. In its day, it was used on many early Motown hits, and found its way into the PA racks of countless churches and school auditoriums across the USA. Radiator brings the classic Altec tube sound to desktop recording rigs, capturing the distinctive warmth and punch of the original hardware. Featuring the modeled bass and treble tone controls from the original unit, a mix control for easy parallel processing, and the saturation and harmonic effects of the original hardwares input and output amplifiers. All of these different circuit elements interact, allowing a wide range of tones to be created with just a few simple knobs. Plus we let you decide if the original noise is on or off.
