ALT PIANO is the complete and unabridged big sister to our infamous Upright Felt Piano. We recorded an old, humble and character-filled upright piano from the 60s, with and without felt making this a piano with two very different characters. Soft and beautiful or bright and lively, or blend between the recordings to achieve a tone unlike anything else. We also re-recorded the piano samples in three distinctly different and unique ways to create a series of textural sound layers, which can be mixed with the natural piano or used on their own. With dozens of other unique and interesting controls, you can create a very diverse range of sounds all from just one instrument.

AIRFLOW, VIBRATION AND INTIMACY

We have never heard and played such an instrument before. It sounds very organic, very lively and above all very unique. It sounds like airflow, vibration and intimacy. But if you take a closer look at Luft and see what the original sound sources are, with which Luft assembles its sound, it’s not really surprising! Luft is based exclusively on simple aerophonic instruments. They are all instruments that produce their sound through a stream of air that flows through a vibrating reed or over an opening. Summarizing: Luft consists only of airflow instruments. There are a total of 34 individual airflow instruments, which can be divided into 6 categories: fan or pump organs, blown keyboards like harmonicas and melodicas, simple flutes and a church organ with several individual registers. But there are also other, less common sounds like a water bottle, a hand pipe, a pipe – or a nose flute or a kazou. Some sounds were resampled over an old tape machine which gives them the sound of a Mellotron which charmingly complements the overall sound palette of Luft.

A simple sample set From the Hohner Pianet T, but with a twist.

As always, sampled to worn tape to emulate the mellotron sound, but this time the samples have been gently overdriven with vintage valves, to bring out the hidden character of the Pianet, which without sounds very polite. With the valves added, the Pianet comes to life, and sounds like a wurlitzer / rhodes hybrid, and more. There are over 40 different 70s inspired instrument patches created for Kontakt 4.2.4 or later, and the wavs will also load in other samplers too (but no presets). The kontakt patches have a theme of modulation running through most of them, from autowah to ramped lfos and delays (via the mod wheel), as well as classic phasers.
