The session drummer series was created in order to provide a quick and effective method to add realistic percussion grooves to your track. The intent will be to cover grooves which are either very hard to technically synthestrate (ex. a stirring brush pattern) or those which can sound “square” when crafted via midi or midi loops. Each volume will be contain a series of loops and a Kontakt “kit” patch. The patch itself is a faithful representation of the sound of the loops, having each ingredient carefully sampled with 8x round robin and multiple velocity layers. Seamlessly interchanging the kit with the loops the composer can provide exactly the track which suits them. The loops provide a realistic variation to different patterns a percussionist might lay down at a session. They don’t go off on tandems, nor do they reach outside the realm of the title of the volume. They are specifically made to serve the library by playing a variation in the style described.

The traditional family of Middle Eastern (Arabic) hand percussion instruments is generally defined as an open shell frame drum with large cymbals or jingles – aka Riq Drums. It is similar in appearance and origin to a tambourine, but this broad family of specialized drums is treated as a very serious and deeply nuanced instrument class in both traditional and modern Middle Eastern, Central Asian and Eastern European music. Rather than simply being an accompaniment or backing instrument, the Rik family of drums can often take a lead or solo role. The jingles, rattles or rings are often played as a discreet component of the drum, along with a broad range of unique head and rim finger and hand articulations.

VZone is a software synthesizer utilizing the sampler engine of Kontakt 4 (and above) and sets the focus on one of the coolest digital instruments ever built: the Casio VZ. After their highly successful CZ-series, Casio created the VZ – a vastly improved synthesizer using Casios own FM-style architecture: iPD (Interactive Phase Distortion). Although that the original VZ had a generous display (for that time) programming it wasn’t significantly easier than with the Yamaha DX-synthesizers. vzone is the most convenient and inspiring way to use the classic sound of old casios.. VZone is a celebration of all things VZ. First we sampled 24 of our favourite sounds, and to make sure the sounds could be used for more than its original style, we looped each and every sound. If you ever tried to loop an FM-style bass sound, you understand we put in a lot of work capturing truly versatile sounds. There are three identical oscillators, where each sound has its own volume, envelope, pitch, pan and filter. Creating massive stacks is as simple as blending your favourite sounds together. The filter is both highpass and lowpass. Dragging down the parameter down to minus cuts away all high frequencies, while dragging the parameter up filters out the bass frequencies.

The “Härjedalspipa”, “shepherds flute” in our context called the Nordic Low Whistle, is a Swedish cylindrical flute, build by craftsman Gunnar Stenmark.The model is a result of folk music research, and has also been further developed by musician’s preferences. This particular instrument is a seven-hole whistle, made of slow grown fir-wood.

Midi Sound Set

I’m a bit obsessed with making available all 128 instruments of the General Midi 1 Sound Set. This is the sound set that midi files use to recreate music, soundfonts traditionally revolve around them and if you get 128 voice keyboard these are generally the voices it has. It is a standard to make sure that when Instrument 1 is called for it is always Acoustic Grand Piano and not bagpipes or a car crash.Thanks to Sarcyan allowing me to convert his most excellent Musyng Kite Sound Font, I think all 128 sounds are now represented here at old bigcat Instruments and available for Kontakt 5.
