New tutor this week, Glasgow based driving, soulful Techno producer Harvey McKay. In How To Make Techno 2019 Harvey shows us his creative process in making a dark, brooding, and downright sinister techno track from start to finish in Ableton. Starting with a sub layered overdriven and saturated kick we build tension with a rumbling bassline, pitched and crunched down hi-hats and a snare before adding the sinister main synth line created in u-he’s Repro. Once the elements are in place we build up the scenes in Ableton’s session view before recording as if playing live to lay down the basic arrangement. It’s then a case of tweaking automation and editing the playthrough to get to the final mixdown so it can be sent off for mastering.

How To Make Pop with an awesome track ‘Get Gone’ featuring Stella Jones on vocals. Starting with a blank template in Cubase, Austin builds this song from the ground up with a simple but catchy chord progression followed by synth pad and lead sound design using multiple layers and percussive elements to get the initial feel and groove. Always keeping the vocalist in mind, Austin continues to build the track with wide variety and interest using further sound design, automation of filters and effects so there is plenty for the vocalist to work from. Once the instrumental is completed we get a fascinating insight into the production process as Austin chats with Stella Jones discussing how they collaborate, even though they are in different locations highlighting the pros and cons and giving a ton of tips and tricks on how to make this sort of artist relationship work. Finally, we bring in the vocals and process the stems adding some dope techniques to help them shine before mixing and mastering to complete the song.

Capable of sample-fast transitions and equipped with a unique variable smoothing algorithm, Gatekeeper allows for drastic, punchy gating and sequencing while keeping the output smooth. In this two-part tutorial 2Scoops firstly looks at the user interface and controls before showing us how he would use the plugin for his own tracks. Loaded with some awesome presets, Gatekeeper is definitely one of those plugins were messing around with the various parameters and their combinations can give you some truly unexpected and creative results. This is not a video about production! Specifically, this is aimed at you if you are comfortable at creating beats and producing but not sure how the music side of things works? This course uses examples from the EDM genre, although the techniques discussed here can be used to produce any music in a pop style. The course will make use of Logic Pro X on an apple mac, but there is no reason that you can’t reproduce anything I do and show you here on another comparable DAW, on any computer.
