Larry starts off by discussing the theory of gain staging and why it’s such a necessary aspect of music production when working in a DAW. You’ll learn specifics about making sure plugins (especially vintage ones) stay in their “sweet spot” for the best sound, along with other tips for maintaining a healthy signal level. Larry also discusses various metering options, including VU meters and peak levels, to make sure you’re keeping your levels under control at all times. Then, after demonstrating the procedure for properly setting input levels, he sets up a good initial level for the kick drum, which will be used as the basis for building our mix. This ensures we’ll have plenty of headroom in the master bus.
