What happens when you take a perfectly good instrument – one thats been around for hundreds of years – and completely rethink it? Many musicians have dug their hands into the piano, John Cage prepared it with bolts between the strings, others have strummed it or hit it with their hands, but one of the most ethereal and unorthodox techniques is that of bowed piano. First suggested by the composer Curtis Curtis-Smith in 1972, the technique uses flexible bows made from monofilament nylon fishing-line which are then coated in rosin. The nylon is threaded under the strings, and the performer can coax a sustained tone from the piano. Bowed piano has since been adopted and expanded upon by various other composers, including George Crumb and more extensively.

White Sister – 36 velocity layer design piano!. The White Grand is by many musicians and composers believed to be the finest contemporary studio rock/pop/jazz Grand Piano. The White Grand is heard on numerous recordings and are used on soundtracks from many movies and other media. When designing the White Grand we went for a very special sound. A sound that would make the White Grand special and stick out. This called for close miking with microphones placed close to the hammers/strings. We also recorded a second stereo pair using two microphones in a position that’s more normal for piano recordings and mixed that with the original microphones; this gave a bit more ambience and a slightly rounder tone but with all the characteristics that makes the White Grand so Grand.

The choice fell on this organ because of its unbelievable power and sonority. Its volume is able to fill sovereignly the vast nave. It’s impressive percussive quality in the development of sound is an ideal case for recording samples. The great organ by Pierre Schyven /Salomon van Bever (1874/1912) is a discovery. Being the second greatest instrument of its builder it stands in the tradition of the symphonic organ in Belgium. Cavaille-Coll held Schyven in high regard and even today one can hear why.
