The Vox Continental is probably the most famous of the ‘new breed’ of transistor organs which emerged in the early ’60s. Previously, organs were built around tone-wheel technology. This undoubtedly created a fantastic (classic) organ sound but made the instruments heavy and unwieldy (and expensive). With the advent of transistors, it was possible to create lightweight, portable organs…. in theory. In practice, the majority sounded thin and weak by comparison. However, that sound in itself appealled to the new ‘surf’ and ‘beatnik’ music which was evolving at the time. The portability also appealled to groups. The Vox Continental was unusual in that it actually sounded quite good…. not cheap and cheesy like so many of its rivals.

Cronk-O-Tron (as the name suggests) is a cheap and cheerful thing with a dark and crusty old tone. It’s made up of layers of stuff carefully blended to create a vintage/retro kind of strings/voice pad sound – lo-fi and wobbly. It’s extensively multi-sampled in stereo and each sample was recorded for a minute before having long and luxurious loops applied that allow the sound to ‘breathe’. But there’s another twist…

This time, from a 1950s of the future where science fiction and science fact were somewhat blurred … a portable communications device intended for an over-ambitious and abandoned manned mission to Mars… With two oscillators offering a wide variety of true analogue, ring modulated waveforms which can be tuned and mixed, modulated further by a multi-wave LFO and envelope as well as FM and AM modulated, there’s a broad palette of sounds to play with and mix and match before these pass to an ADSR envelope and an array of speaker simulations and lo/hi cut filters to create a wider range of antiquated, retro sci-fi sounds that could have originated in an old black and white B-movie or the early experimental electronic music studios of Europe.
