The intent of the Fixed Filter Bank was to enhance the primary signal of the synthesizer, adding harmonics at specific frequencies or removing them at others. Some wanted completely new and never before heard sonic landscapes to push themselves and their audiences into new worlds of musical experience. Others wanted to create more traditional and familiar sounds, while still pushing the boundaries and making use of the new voltage controls, features, and character not available in a traditional “un-plugged” instrument. Some wanted both. Enter the new reimagined P915 MEDUSA Fixed Filter Bank. A filter which adds subtle or not so subtle resonances to the signal or removing frequency bands altogether. This process, when mixed in with the unaltered, “dry” signal, can mimic the actual behavior of a traditional instrument. It can also act on its own as a unique and creative source of sound shaping possibilities not available in other filter structures.

Cycling ‘74 has released version 8 of Max and the company is calling it “the closest thing to a mind-expanding drug Max has ever had”. The visual programming language has taken on a raft of new improvements in the latest iteration, most notably the introduction of the new MC. objects. MC, we’re presuming, stands for multi-channel and Cycling ‘74 is sure it will “transform how you imagine sound design”. It makes patches with 100 channels of audio look as simple as those with a single channel. It seems MC will give you the ability to manipulate multiple audio channels and operations with fewer objects. Much of the development in version 8 has been focussing on performance. Cycling ’74 now claim that Max will launch 20 times faster on Windows than before and load patches up to four times as quick. Performance as a whole is improved, with complex UI operations being significantly more responsive. Another big update is the ability to control your patches with hardware, without the need to patch. In the new Mappings Mode, you can assign physical controls to your patch in just three steps; simply enter Mappings Mode, select a slider and then move your controller – done.

Offering three parallel channels of each effects chain as well as a wealth of modulation and routing options, Subvert is our take on signal decimation with a twist. Subvert’s multi-channel layout and per-effect bypass option make it possible to reconfigure the order of effects in each chain in a variety of creative ways. Between the unconventional routing options, 15 effects processors, global EQ, numerous modulation options and global randomizer, Subvert makes it possible to achieve mind-bending destructive effects. While Subvert’s primary focus is on Distortion, it features four additional effects that can be configured in various ways across its three channels. Driving its core are 2 envelope followers and 4 LFOs with various wave shapes and optional tempo sync, which can have their output inverted or combined using up to 4 modulation mixers.
