Electronic Sound’s final cover star of 2024 is the legendary Jean-Michel Jarre and we are bundling the issue with a limited edition green vinyl seven-inch featuring live versions of ‘Oxygène 4’ and ‘Équinoxe 7’, two of the synth superstar’s biggest and best-known tracks. Jean-Michel Jarre’s impact on electronic music during the last 50 years is huge, not least because of his thrilling live performances. His concerts are the focus of our cover story, with Jarre detailing how his shows have evolved over the decades and guiding us through some of the events he’s most famous for. His picks include Paris, Beijing and Houston, plus his Docklands sets in London in 1988. Expect highly entertaining tales of epic staging and equally epic rainfall, as well as several billion lasers. We’re looking back over the story of Throbbing Gristle this issue, interviewing the surviving members of the band and others associated with TG. Genesis P-Orridge, Cosey Fanni Tutti, Chris Carter and Peter “Sleazy” Christopherson ripped up all the rules, both sonically and visually, both as a live act and a recording unit. They are widely recognised as the prime movers of industrial music, but their influence and impact stretches way beyond any particular genre. Their early gigs attracted everybody from acid-fried hippies and spotty anarcho-punks to oddball alt-funkateers and hot-wired electronics freaks. There has never been another group even remotely like Throbbing Gristle.
While most things these days are made over seas in huge factories with the singular goal of maximizing profits by cutting corners and using the cheapest components, Black Box Analog Design does things differently. In fact we take a different approach to most things. We are not interested in creating clones of old gear or building derivatives of popular gear. We are interested in creating gear that does something that hasn’t been done before, addresses a need we come across in the studio and takes a new approach to a problem or design. We didn’t start out as gear designers. We come from the studio world and years ago, our quest to solve certain problems we came across lead us to begin tinkering with circuits of our own. Since we came from an audio engineering background and not a circuit design background, we weren’t influenced by standard designs or restricted by thoughts of what we “should” do. Instead we allowed our ears to lead us in the right direction. Every part of our all analog circuits is assembled by hand and every component is painstakingly and precisely matched. We use a real, high voltage, linear power supply, custom wound transformers and the best quality components made.
