    OptoRED is a transparent Optical Attenuator (compressor) based on the classic American unit used on countless hit records. This is part of our new “Enhanced Classics” series. Compression is one of the most important tools in the arsenal of an Engineer, Music Producer & Artist alike. This is now a device that far surpasses its original intent which was to control the level of the sound automatically. Today we use different types of compressors for inducing a “Vibe” & “Feel” to our instruments, percussion, drums, and voice. Digital and Analog Compressors have come a long way, but some classics are still preferred even today because they are now as much a part of a genre or musical style that they are now deemed as musical instruments in their own right.

    INSTRUMENT BACKGROUND. Bands like the Doors, the Animals, the Monkees made the Vox Continental one of the most famous electronic organs of the 60’s. This particular model was made in the UK and also in Italy and was rather simple in both electronics and features. Like many other electronic organs of the same age, the sound generator is based on the so-called “Top Octave Synthesizer”, TOS for short, responsible of the generation of 12 waveforms, one for each note of the last octave of the organ keyboard. The basic waveform in this case is a low-pass filtered square wave. The lower octaves are produced by means of “divider” circuits that halve the frequency of each waveform, going so forth for each lower octave down to the pedalboard tones. This organ offers only two different registers: Sine and Master, with 4 different foot lengths.

    Analog Modeled Italian Magnetic Echo Plugin.

    Echoes T7E is a faithful recreation of a vintage tube magnetic echo made in Italy in the early ‘60s. This echo effect unit is based on a magnetic spinning drum with both record and playback heads arranged around a recording wire wound around the drum circumference. This solution provides better stability over the usual tape transport with reduced wow and flutter. Since the main “core” of this effect is based on the above mechanism, we modelled both the mechanics and the electronics. Echoes T7E also provides 3 different playback modes allowing you to set different spinning speed or ever synchronize it to your host tempo extending the original delay length from ~310ms up to ~1100ms.

    TimeVerb-X is a new plugin from GSi that combines GSi’s “classic” Type4 spring reverb, first released in 2008, and a new algorithmic digital reverb. The “Type4” spring reverb emulation was originally inspired by an Accutronics reverb tank type 4, like those used in classic Hammond organs of the A100 series, also used in many famous electric guitar amplifiers. The digital reverb, instead, was first developed for the GSi Gemini sound module, but was also included in some Crumar hardware instruments. Both effects have been slightly expanded and further improved for the release of TimeVerb-X, as the spring reverb now features a self-oscillating feedback decay adjustment and a stereo width knob, and the digital reverb includes the early reflections section that was missing in the original project. Both reverbs put together make up a great sound when working in parallel, and create some interesting atmospheres when working in serial.
