Kalimba – also known as mbira or thumb piano, this instrument has its roots in African music with ethnomusicologist Hugh Tracey bringing the instrument to countries abroad in the 20th Century. To add a unique and modern twist we sampled a Hugh Tracey kalimba with nail (performing in a more traditional style where the nail is used on the metal tongues), finger (where the finger tip is used excluding nail, a slightly softer attack is obtained) and the incredible sound of the Kalimba played with a rubber. This results in a soft, rounded sound that works wonderfully with the earthly ring create when performing the instrument. All these samples were then used to create mini performances through a chain of out-board gear to create Moods, consisting of microloops, textures and sonic oddities that add a wealth of potential for the user to create unique sounds and soundscapes.

A first in cinematic sampling, Brute Flute is a Contrabass Flute library like no other. Recorded in exceptional detail and capturing a range of cinematic textures, harmonic embellishments, explosive articulations and an expressive true legato, this wonderful library features a highly unique and inspiring set of sounds. The third release in our brand new Experiments range, this library was performed by renowned flautist, who is known for his virtuosic performances across blockbusters such as Alien Covenant, Horizon Zero Dawn, Mary Magdalene and many more. The library was recorded on a dry scoring stage in the heart of London, using some of the best microphones to capture every nuance of Gareth’s captivating performances. To capture Gareth’s performance on this magnificent instrument, we chose a dry scoring stage in the heart of London. We thought this was important as we wanted to record every nuance in intimate detail, providing clean and flexible recordings that can be used for an upfront, aggressive sound, or manipulated afterwards to create a spacious, cinematic sound. We recorded multiple microphone perspectives such as Close Mono, Close Stereo, Mid Stereo and Far Stereo, and used top quality microphones such as the Beyer M160, AKG C414, Neumann U87 and Neumann TLM103.

You can help by mistreating it in horrible ways with screwdrivers, bows, drum sticks, mallets and fingers. The instrument holds a vast amount of otherworldly sounds, which is ideal for composers looking for new disturbing, horror-like textures for their scores. Frendo is partially a mallet instrument, recorded with wooden and rubber mallets, but is also a more traditional string instrument, since we recorded finger plucks and bows. It’s the sound of Satan’s cello, weeping softly for your burning soul.

This library features a deeply sampled plucked zither, a small harp-like instrument, recorded in close stereo, and mapped across a playable range of four octaves. There is an additional layer of ambient sound design, the ‘dream layer’, which blends beautifully with the acoustic zither. Dream Zither was close miked in a dry space, allowing the flexibility of adding how much or little reverb you want. It was recorded with a multitude of velocity layers, which allows for very delicate and realistic playing. The Dream Layer is a bed of ambient sound design, made from the zither samples, transformed and processed in many ways to create an ethereal pad which blends with the dry zither perfectly. The volume, intensity and pitch of the Dream Layer can be customised to create a range of timbral colours. Alternatively, the Dream Layer can be disabled completely for a pure zither sound. Dream Zither is designed to be a ‘plug and play’ instrument which sounds great out of the box, but still gives you enough flexibility to dial in your own sound.

Frozen Percussion: Vibes

Introducing the second instalment of our Frozen Percussion series: Vibes. Frozen Vibes is a deep sampled concert vibraphone, performed with a bow to create rich, infinite sustains, frozen in time. As with all our libraries, the instrument was programmed with ease of use in mind. Simply move the mod wheel while playing to smoothly morph between different dynamic levels. While the instrument may look simple on the surface, there is an advanced performance script behind-the-scenes, which allows for very responsive and expressive playing. When bowing a metallic instrument such as a vibraphone, changes in dynamics are often quite slow since the instrument takes time to vibrate and resonate. Our performance engine replicates this characteristic by smoothly interpolating between dynamics. Additionally, when a note is played, the engine will gradually ramp up to the target dynamic. This is more realistic than a traditional ADSR attack, because it is morphing between real dynamic layers – not simply fading in the volume.
