Sometimes when I record an acoustic guitar or piano with a singer songwriter and want to add orchestral elements to it, I want to feel like it’s recorded in the same environment by the same kind of player. I might want it to sound like someone pulling an old instrument out of the attic and blowing a few notes for a unique texture, or picking up an instrument for the first time and just seeing what happens. The attacks are inconsistent, the tuning isn’t perfect and the air comes and goes. That’s what Amateur Orchestra is for. The DIY orchestral sound at your fingertips. There is a really wide range of tones here and a lot of niche instruments and beginner instruments were sampled for more options. From plastic brass to contrabassoon to someone trying a cello bow for the first time to someone who hadn’t picked up a trumpet in 20 years. None of these are perfect recreations of any instrument. Just a really big collection of colors to choose from that get you to a place where it’s clearly not your big city philharmonic.

The most realistic and detailed virtual oud instrument ever released!. It features all crucial articulations, a gorgeous & inspiring UI, and a full microtuning engine for authentic playing.  The history of the oud extends back to antiquity, having been referenced in writings over 1,000 years old. It is a fretless, stringed instrument that has been used in both Middle Eastern and European music for many centuries, and is now played all over the world. The instrument we sampled is a custom-made, double soundboard Turkish oud by Faruk Türünz. The instrument was performed by Stelios Varveris and recorded with pristine Neumann & AKG mics through an SSL console in a treated studio room. Our goal in creating this library was to produce an incredibly intuitive instrument that simply sounds great out of the box. The powerful script engine seamlessly voices notes and chords – no complex keyswitches required. Advanced users can delve into the gorgeous, inspiring user interface for custom mix controls like microphone blend, EQ, compression, and reverb, and microtuning presets can be used to achieve incredibly authentic performances. We are thrilled to make this instrument available to you, and hope that you will use it in many compositions from film/TV/game scores to authentic mockups, or even rock & pop tracks. Enjoy!

The library can naturally be used on its own. But when combined with other titles from the Virtuoso Japanese Series — such as KOTO 13 Version 2, KOTO 17, or SHAKUHACHI — as well as orchestral instruments, KOTO 20 can complete a rich and broad ensemble. As a historical note, the 20-string koto was conceived by Keiko Nosaka in 1969. Initially, this koto was strung with 20 strings, but in later iterations, another string was added to make it a 21-string instrument.

Warm Bassy Plucks

The Gimbri is a three-stringed skin-covered bass that originated in Morocco. It is actually a lute that produces rich deep but also somewhat harsh and earthy tones through its wooden body and goat gut strings. Often compared to a bass guitar, the gimbri brings deepness into the music with its low dynamic range. The main focus was to capture different articulations of the Gimbri while keeping its organic feeling and warm sound. Traditionally played with the fingers, we recorded it muted, with a plec and through an amp to ensure a wide variety of tones. It comes with five presets, while the possibility of custom settings is kept open.
