BFD XFL is an expansion pack for BFD3, BFD Eco and BFD2 offering a hugely varied pallette of sounds. BFD XFL shares the same room at California’s Eldorado Studios that gave the original BFD library its unique, authentic character. BFD XFL includes rare and sought-after instruments, many of which are played with brushes and mallets. Rides with bells and crashes with edge hits sit alongside a diverse range of splash, china, accent cymbals and detailed hihats. There’s even a selection of kit-oriented percussion such as cowbells, jamblocks and tambourines. All this is recorded at up to 93 velocity layers resulting in a 22GB library with a room sound that’s been tried and tested on countless records since the launch of the original BFD. Its sounds cover latin, world and kit-centric percussion as well as outlandishly strange junk percussion and kitchenware. Amongst the highlights are congas, bongos, timbales, djembes, darbukas, udu, ashiko, bodhran, chimes, triangles, shakers and tambourines, alongside esoteric effect sounds like thundersheets, waterphones and bowed gongs. Combining the emotions, grandeur and mystery of Kabuki and Noh performances with the reverberations of tapped hand drums, Kabuki & Noh Percussion features 56 authentic Japanese percussion instruments including traditional hand drums, pitched drums, bells, gongs and music boxes alongside Noh flute and authentic vocal motifs. Also included are the ashibyoshi foot beats and tsukeuchi sound-effect clappers crucial to Kabuki performance. There seem to be two types of mix engineers: those who own a pair of the original units this plug is inspired by, and those who want to. I can’t give you the original, but I can give you my twisted take on it. For starters, I tweaked the distortions to make them fuzzier, because I have a fondness for dirt & grime. I added a 250Hz sidechain HPF option which leaves all bass frequencies uncompressed, as well as a 6kHz sidechain ‘push’ to smooth out harsh, aggressive stuff. Most compressors press sounds back, this one pushes them forward. The original is in every million dollar studio, now my version can be in yours
