Sometimes when I record an acoustic guitar or piano with a singer songwriter and want to add orchestral elements to it, I want to feel like it’s recorded in the same environment by the same kind of player. I might want it to sound like someone pulling an old instrument out of the attic and blowing a few notes for a unique texture, or picking up an instrument for the first time and just seeing what happens. The attacks are inconsistent, the tuning isn’t perfect and the air comes and goes. That’s what Amateur Orchestra is for. The DIY orchestral sound at your fingertips. There is a really wide range of tones here and a lot of niche instruments and beginner instruments were sampled for more options. From plastic brass to contrabassoon to someone trying a cello bow for the first time to someone who hadn’t picked up a trumpet in 20 years. None of these are perfect recreations of any instrument. Just a really big collection of colors to choose from that get you to a place where it’s clearly not your big city philharmonic.

With 3 different mallets, 2 mic positions, 6 layers for short articulations, and 3x round robin, it is one of the most accurate vibraphone libraries ever. The user-friendly interface allows you to customize the sound of the vibraphone to fit in different musical contexts. Something about the Playing Mode feature: When we were working on My Vibes we realized that a real vibraphone just doesn’t play as a piano keyboard. When the pedal is up the notes are short, when the pedal is down the notes are long. There’s no way to keep a single note long and the others short, like in a piano. In My Vibes you have this additional feature. In real mode My Vibes reacts like a real vibraphone, while in piano-like mode you can play the vibraphone like a piano. To keep notes long you don’t have to keep the pedal down, you just need to keep the keys pressed.

The Idea & Process

Cassette Vibraphone is the first instrument in cassette series recorded with real round-robin samples – every note in every dynamic layer was recorded 4 times, on top of that Kontakt version still has the option to turn on the simulated round-robin. Cassette Vibraphone was recorded in full range (3 octaves) with 4 dynamic layers using 4 different cassette decks. Overall there are 2372 samples – 592 samples per deck, plus 4 noise samples from each deck (6,76 GB of uncompressed 24-bit WAV files).

Vibraphone ELASTiK

Vibraphone is part of our Instrument series for Elastik and captures that classic ‘vibes’ sound in all its beautiful glory. The extensive collection of phrases was played on what many consider the pinnacle of the vibraphone world: a mighty Ludwig-Musser Vibraphone. Captures The Beautiful Sound In Every Detail The library contains nearly 380 individual vibraphone performances across 1.1 GB of sample data. The loops are grouped into 37 folders, each featuring multiple phrases in a specific tempo and key combination. Original tempos range from 60 to 90 BPM, making the performances ideal for downtempo Jazz, Latin, Bossa, Chill, Lounge and related musical styles. However, tempo can be simply adjusted to match your project using Elastik’s powerful sample manipulation features. Phrases are between 2 to 8 bars in length (up to 32 seconds) and can easily be sequenced together within a full-length musical production.

I’ve been given a highly damaged and noisy vibraphone recording by a fellow sound developer. Using the power of spectral repair, I manually fixed each note to its original state giving this vibraphone sample set a rebirth, hence its name Vibraphone Renaissance. Three variations of this vibraphone have been created: the original vibraphone sound, a looped version that can be sustained, and a granular drone version perfect for soundtrack scoring.
