The Mangle grew from years of experiments with granular synthesis. The goal was to ‘play’ with the stream of grains in a musical and expressive way. This led to some unique features: a large XY area with real-time grain display. Pitch and tempo locking. True stereo grains and multi-timbral layering. Stretch out rich harmonics from acoustic sounds. Turn field recordings into ambient soundscapes. At the end of the 70s wavetable synthesis. This was very successful and used by many synthesizer companies in the 80s and 90s. But this technology has its limitations. The main reason is that all sounds are harmonic. In nature this does not happen very often. Many sounds like a piano string have small offsets from the harmonic frequencies. This is even stronger in sounds like bells or percussion.

Roland’s neat little SH-2000 monosynth was in some ways a pretty limited machine, built around a single oscillator plus a moderately squelchy filter circuit. Editing was very basic indeed: a series of 30 colourful tabs along the front edge of the instrument brought the onboard presets into play, while a little panel to the left of the keyboard offered rudimentary control over things like filter modulation, wow, ‘growl’ and portamento. Fiddling with these in real time while noodling away on the keyboard could yield some surprisingly cool effects.
