High School Drum Corps

The Tonehammer High School Drum Corps is a unique library focusing on capturing the powerful, tight sound of high school marching drum corps. Notice the tight, harsh, mid-tones and truncated snap of marching drums. It’s quite distinct from the solid, pleasing punch and smooth resonance of typical rock and symphonic percussion. Rather, it’s meant to be heard loud and clear from a great distance away.Mike was a percussionist back in high school. He returned to his old alma mater 14 years later to capture the feeling and sound of playing in a high school marching drum corps for this library. We decided to record indoor and outdoor versions of the drum line to provide the user with a little more freedom. The goal was not to simply capture the sound of watching a drum corps, but to create the feeling of actually being in the drumline yourself, all the way from rehearsal to the big game. The indoor version was recorded in a wood, tile and fabric surfaced rehearsal hall. The outdoor recordings were done on the football field, so there are occasional stray elements buried in the sound from passing pedestrians and onlookers.

Welcome to the Tonehammer Epic Dhol Ensemble. We bought three high-end Punjab Dhol drums and recorded them in the same orchestral hall as our Epic Toms. It is by far the most massive sounding epic percussion ensemble library available anywhere. We designed it specifically for epic and aggressive percussive scoring. The Punjab Dhol is a double-sided barrel drum large and bulky to produce the preferred loud bass. The drum consists of a wooden barrel with animal hide or synthetic skin stretched over its open ends, covering them completely. These skins can be stretched or loosened with a tightening mechanism made up of either interwoven ropes, or nuts and bolts. Tightening or loosening the skins subtly alters the pitch of the drum sound. The stretched skin on one of the ends is thicker and produces a deep, low frequency (higher bass) sound and the other thinner one produces a higher frequency sound. In contemporary Punjabi music, dhols with synthetic, or plastic, treble skins are very common.

Inspired by the Blue Man group, we decided to build a PVC pipe thwacker thing… a ” Tube Drum ” .. technically known as a “plosive aerophone” . Starting with a very long 20 foot (6 metre) pipe (that’s a 57 Hz fundamental, for those without a calculator)… we thwacked, and we sampled and we sawed… we thwacked again, and we sawed again — we went back to the hardware store a few times — until one last little piece (6 inches / 16 cm) gave us the high C6. This gave us the ?ve octave completely multi-sampled 63 note Tube Drum.
