Whether you’re into recording, mixing, mastering, live sound, broadcast, or podcasts you need to know how to use compressors. In this class you’ll learn the fundamentals of mixing with compression. Learning these differences and knowing where to apply them can take an OK recording/mix and make it a great recording/mix. We’ll teach you a fool proof system to set up any compressor on any instrument – it’s all about setting up the controls in the correct order, knowing what’s possible and using your ears. The Guide to Making Great Mixes and Final Masters on Your Computer

Mixing and mastering are the final challenges in creating great recordings. Great mixes require both creativity and a practical understanding of process, while final masters require both a clear sense for purpose and specialized ears for achieving artistic goals. Mixing and Mastering in the Box gives readers the practical tools for accomplishing both of these tasks while highlighting the artistry of the creative process. While much of the information presented in Mixing and Mastering in the Box is applicable to those using analog mixing gear, or a hybrid of digital and analog tools, the book focuses directly on working completely within the Digital Audio Workstation (DAW). Author Steve Savage lets readers in on such topics as the secrets of collaboration and using EQ, compression, delay, reverb, and brickwall limiting to improve the sound of records, each topic illustrated with a myriad of concrete examples.

While genre does not affect many mixing techniques, EDM (electronic dance music) has unique challenges. Artists want their songs to sound loud, wide, and heavy, without suppressing their unique texture or competing with the underlying rhythm. In this course, Colin Fisher teaches advanced mixing techniques specifically suited to the EDM environment. He’ll touch on loudness and dynamics, headroom and gain, and processing with compression, limiting, and clipping, as well as show how to manipulate stereo and frequency placement like the pros do. The end result is a fat, wide, and full sound that will help your tracks break through.

          BUILD YOUR MIX FOUNDATION STRONG

The methods for getting a great mix are dependent on the genre of music, gear being used, and the person doing the mixing, but the fundamentals are always the same. Let mixing expert Brock Jon show you the ever-important fundamentals that you can apply to all of your mixes. The next two videos discuss Balancing the Mix, beginning with the Drums, in order to have your tracks sounding close to where you want them before you start processing individual sections and tracks. Brock then gets into the individual sections of your song, beginning with Treating the Drum Tracks. After that, he explores Treating the Bass, Keyboards, Guitars, and Vocals. Finally, with the song almost mixed and all the tracks sitting where they need to, he shows you how to Apply Reverb to Give Your Mix Extra Depth and Width.

In these tutorials Echo Sound Works explains four fundamental techniques to getting that desired balance in your mix. Shows you how to use Mid Side and MidLeftRight processing to clean up muddy mixes.Mid Side processing is a common technique that allows us to split the audio signal into the Mono (or mid content) and then the side (left and right usually). This is especially helpful on synths and instruments that are stereo tracks because you can EQ the middle/mono content independently from the side content. You can take this process a step further and split your stereo tracks into three individual stems or tracks. Make sure the center one is a MONO track and the pan the other two hard left and hard right. This will give you the utmost control over each element in the stereo field.
