The library can naturally be used on its own. But when combined with other titles from the Virtuoso Japanese Series — such as KOTO 13 Version 2, KOTO 17, or SHAKUHACHI — as well as orchestral instruments, KOTO 20 can complete a rich and broad ensemble. As a historical note, the 20-string koto was conceived by Keiko Nosaka in 1969. Initially, this koto was strung with 20 strings, but in later iterations, another string was added to make it a 21-string instrument.

The deepest koto, bass koto and shamisen library ever released, featuring world-class performer Masayo Ishigure! 2 mic positions, extensive dynamics and RRs, FX patches and extensive traditional and contemporary articulations. We created Koto Nation out of a desire to see traditional Japanese instruments receive a deep, thorough sampling treatment, much like our acclaimed North Indian sample library Sitar Nation. While there are a handful of libraries which include samples of the koto and shamisen, they feature only the most basic articulations and few (if any) velocities or round robins. To our knowledge, the bass koto has never been sampled at all! Given the popularity of the shakuhachi and taiko in many Western film soundtracks, we wanted to allow film composers, hobbyist producers, ethnomusicologists, anime fans and everyone in between access to these classic instruments and complete the repertoire of traditional Japanese sounds available.

The Koto is a traditional Japanese Instrument. It has 13 strings with movable bridges, Its body is made of paulownia, and the bridges are made of ivory. Strings were originally made of silk but now it is more common to use polyester. Originally derived from the Chinese Zheng, the Japanese Koto appears around 300 B.C and is the national instrument of Japan. This Pack features the beautiful playing of Kozue Matsumoto, a native of Japan, now based in LA.
