Iron Pack 9 was created with premium analog hardware, including an Elektron Analog Four and various filters and effects. The circuitry is modern, but each of the 12 custom patches designed by our own Spencer Nunamaker was inspired by classic vintage sounds, with the full body and warm you expect from analog synthesis. And each patch includes an array of easy controls and FX options to radically reshape the sound into your own fresh mutations. Each patch was created by meticulously constructing unique signal path and modulator routings, often with multiple LFOs effecting each other both parallel and in series. Once the path was designed, Spencer brought them to life, capturing their organic flavors in real-time, using a variety of velocity, joystick and envelope stage mapping to modulate different parameters, LFOs to modulate other LFOs, combined with after-touch LFO depth/speed modulation and other wild-card tweaks to generate awesome chain-reactions. The result is a warm, rich set of great synth patches, each with a host of sound-shaping parameters that let you further manipulate them into your own new custom sounds with the help of our GUI. The sounds a crisp, high-fidelity and modern, but there’s a strong element of retro-fatness in each of them. Read the Contents tab for details about each of the synth patches. Welcome to our Bamblong (tuned bamboo log drum). The Bamblong is a small tuned percussion instrument, similar in principle to a marimba. It has 4 bamboo resonance chambers, roughly ranging between 1½ – 2¼ inches wide and 8 – 14 inches long, with sound holes in the top of each. The playing surfaces are thin bamboo planks, suspended on pegs over each bamboo log. It came with a set of mallets with flat, round heads that appear to be carved out of bicycle tire. It has a very crisp yet mellow, raspy note with a short sustain.

Imagine playing the same Fender Rhodes that was used on legendary recordings from the 1970’s! Artists like Chic, Peter Fampton, Tony Bennett and hundreds more used this vintage keyboard. J Chris Griffin’s library of Rhodes samples includes an MK11 and a Stereo Suitcase. Chris went into the world-renowned Avatar Studios (formerly Power Station) for several days and sampled their Rhodes, using similar signal paths to the recordings done over 30 years ago. The speakers were mic’d with Neuman U-87 and U-47 FET microphones, running through Neve 1073 pre’s and finally through Apogee converters on the way into Pro Tools®. The room mics were Coles 4038’s run through Pultecs and Apogee converters before Pro Tools®. The DI was an Avalon D5. Chris meticulously hyper-sampled this popular vintage keyboard at different velocities and went through the tedious process of setting up instrument patches for the EXS 24, Kontakt. Chris offers separate DI, Amp and Room samples, giving users the ability to blend the samples to their liking.

The project started off by acoustically recording 21 tine actuations from a disassembled music box mechanism placed on a wooden sounding board using both conventional condenser and contact microphones. The sound of the clockwork motor and air brake mechanisms was also captured. A synthesized halo effect was created to blend with the tines by capturing several beating sine waves from a 1960’s tube based dual tone generator which were fed through the filter stages of a Minimoog with the filter in near resonance. A user interface was devised to implement a randomised delay feature between two groups of acoustic tine instruments to create a plink effect and to blend the halo and motor effects together to form The Cosmic Music Box… A second page was developed to permit the user to dial in various effects such as chorus, phaser, delay and reverb…

What’s in the series?

You get all six of the DruMM modules and each module carries all the primary drum samples you would expect: kicks, snares, claps and hi hats and every octave has 2 kicks, 2 snares, 3 hi hats and one clap assigned to it along with the additional samples. This allows for each octave to carry a separate drum kit, so that means you get 5 individual mini drum kits per module plus all the other samples spanned and ready to ‘hit’. These modules can then be layered to create seriously vast and expressive drums. Each and every DruMM module has been produced with specific M/S and phase cancellation processes to ensure that there are no frequency clashes, summing and cancelation when used for layering purposes. The whole purpose of DruMM is to afford you the freedom and scope to maul any sound in any way you see fit. For this reason alone we have developed the tools that any drum and beat producer will want at their fingertips.
