No, I’m not talking about student violins from China, I’m talking about the McNally Strumstick, or more specifically the Diatonic D Grand, our victim today. We’ve recorded just about ‘all she wrote’ on this instrument- picked, plucked, bowed, and more, with sampled releases, easy string selection via modwheel, two mic positions, and at up to 3 velocities and 4 round robins- 1,700 samples and 20 articulations in all.

Crotales are small bronze disks, almost thick cymbals arranged in a piano keyboard style layout to produce chromatic pitches. They are one of the brightest tuned percussion instruments and similar to a piccolo, will cut through even the biggest orchestral dirges. With the producer range however we like to introduce music makers of all persuasions to try instruments they may never have heard of. So alongside the bright and brash elements of this library you can also find moments of magical beauty. A great instrument that can create the feeling of a bright celeste coupled with a triangle but with none of the pre-conceived ideas of either of those instruments, ie Celeste = Harry Potter. Again engineered by Toby Warren at Air-Edel Studios, a classic and pristinely maintained vintage studio in London’s west-end, has recorded a pristinely maintained set of world-class Crotales sampled deeply, with a number of beaters, techniques (including a bowed patch which is going to get tongues wagging!) and from a number of perspectives.

There is barely another instrument to combine both zeitgeist and timelessness in the way a spinet does: Despite being around for centuries already, its sound is still relevant in many musical territories, while at the same time being inextricably connected to the musical works of its time. The brilliant timbre comprises lots of majestic warmth and elegance as well – something often underestimated due to cold and sterile sounding spinet simulations of current keyboards and samplers. The English Spinet library features an instrument built by Thomas Hitchcock in London in 1718. Hitchcocks instruments are widely known as the best-sounding spinets ever built and pointed the way ahead for all spinets to come. Only about 36 of his masterpieces are preserved to this day.

This enchanting instrument offers 150 unique, ethereal vocal phrases across 4 keys, 3 tempi, multiple modes and time signatures. The phrases all have evocatively named groups and detailed tags so you can either start a composition with an inspiring performance, or easily fit one into your existing piece. Every aspect of the library is designed to be super-friendly for composers. All phrases can be played in any key, and all performances were recorded to a set tempo as we understand ‘freeform’ phrases can be difficult to use. The phrases are wordless and performed on the vowels “oo” or “ah” so that lyrics don’t distract from your writing. If you don’t want to use our very flexible Kontakt engine for finding, editing, and playing phrases, you can simply use them directly in your DAW with clearly labeled WAV files.
