This instrument is based on ordinary and (as usual with Atom Hub items) old harmonica tuned in D. The instrument has been sampled with intention of providing organic, non-perfect, breathy, shaky, metallic sounds rather than a virtual incarnation of a nice romantic harmonica tone. Anyway, those are also possible to get from some of the sample sets present in the pack. In case you are hoping for something your current harmonica library (if any) is not capable of, or you just share strange obsession in quirky experimental instruments with me, Harmogeddon belongs in your hands !

We found our Thunder Drum on an obscure island somewhere in Indonesia, but they are available in many countries around the world. A Thunder Drum is made with a spring attached to the skin, so when it is shaken the spring moves and creates a continuous resonance through the body of the instrument. This results in a sound very much like thunder. The drums come in various shapes and sizes, and are sometimes known by other names such as Thunder Tube, Spring Drum, or, Thunder Maker. For this instrument we recorded a variety of rumbles, peals of thunder, strikes, and special effects using contact mics. As the samples were intended to be manipulated, pitch shifted and mangled, the recordings were made at 96 kHz. The sounds can be pitched very low and still have some interesting high frequency content when working at full resolution.

Always wanted to sample a grand piano, but what’s the point? The market is oversaturated of piano libraries, and making another one is pointless unless you make it differently. We sampled a grand piano in mono using a low quality cassette recorder. When I say “low quality” I mean “very low quality”. Unlike other libraries availabe, the piano used was new and tuned, just the recorder was old. It has a lofi vibe to it, but without sacrificing dynamics. Don’t expect a clean sound, it’s the opposite. You can hear it on the demos, it’s perfect for music from the 40s, 50s, 60s… But it reminds me too that kind of “rare demos” from the stars of the 60s and 80s. 8 velocity layers, all notes sampled (no pitchshifting). The background noise was annoying (and there was a lot!) so we applied noise reduction but we made a loop file with the noise itself for if you want to use it. We love this instrument, we could play with it all day long, it’s completely addictive! And we loved the making of it, so you can expect other instruments recorded with this method.

Rheem Kee Bass (1967)

One of our oldest and coolest synths! And from a company more known for hot-water systems. Of course! The RKB has two basic sounds (fuzz-on & fuzz off) with some simple EQ and envelope controls. We sampled both the natural and fuzz settings with the Bass Booster on full. This way, you’ll get the real balls of the original Kee. Our Bass Booster lever sort of works in reverse. As you pull the lever down, it gradually cuts frequencies around 80Hz so that it sounds almost identical to the original when all the way down, and doesn’t knock you off your feet when boosted to full. All the front panel controls have been replicated with an extended feature set without compromising the Katra from the original instrument. If you’re after some vintage analog bass that isn’t another x0x, please consider our K Bass. It provides deep, subby bass and really has its own thing going on.
