The Modernist Xylophone is part of a series of instruments aimed at providing beautiful simple interfaces that match beautiful, simple, and useful audio sampling. We have carefully sampled our Xylophone, with a classic articulation and then added three additional sample sets that use innovative different approaches to playing the instrument: rubber mallets, felt-covered mallets and brushes. We’ve included an innovative approach to delay, using our micro-delay engine, to allow easy development of trilled, and sustained sounds and added a warmth and colour controls to allow colouration of the final output. Finally we added two convolution reverbs dedicated to room spaces to place the instrument in a realistic environment. The Modernist Xylophone comes with 20 snapshots to get you started.

The Instrument: As the name suggests “Bowed Guitars” is a collection of an acoustic guitar and an acoustic bass played exclusively with a bow. By playing these instruments this way, you´ll get a special and unique string sound: intimate and intensive with slight organic scraping. The bass is available as an amped or a clean version. We used a Martin acoustic guitar and a Harley Benton acoustic bass.

We wanted to capture that semidarkness mood and the semblance of something flowing in a natural way, from the body of the player to the soul of the listener. On the acoustic side, we were looking for that round pizzicato sound with that peculiar defined fingers’ attack. If you love jazz, you’ll probably know what we mean. These qualities are not easy to be found in the same musician. This is why we asked Nicola Ziliani to work for us. We met Nicola in 2013. At that time the band in which he played was looking for a vibraphonist and Paolo suggested them to contact me. Since the first time I played with him I was amazed by the way he dived into music with his whole shape, physically playing with his body – and his soul – before playing with his fingers and mind.

The Keyless Piano Body KONTAKT

The Keyless Piano Body is a Kontakt Patch library that features an abandoned upright piano without keyboard. It combines the sounds of 3 extensive recording sessions that took place for the Rolfing series which was originally available as Live Pack only. For session 1 and 2 the body was brought to a studio and literally laid back so that various things like plastic balls, felt balls, glasses and much more could be thrown in to excite the strings. At the end of both sessions tons of samples were ready to edit. They now form 13 Kontakt instruments that encompass several precisely tuned pianos plus many prepared piano sets. Session 3 was kind of a field recording gig as the piano remains were meanwhile moved to a rural garden area. The nightly recordings were done 6-channel so that several sample sets from 2 acoustic mics and 4 contact pick ups could be created. Again, the Kontakt instruments from this session feature the sounds of a rotten piano that is lovely and impressive at the same time. In a second pass the piano strings were treated with a stell jazz brush to bring up 3 multi-channel sets with prepared piano-like sounds.
