We are celebrating the 40th anniversary of the release of Devo’s ‘Freedom Of Choice’, the album that sparked the American synthpop revolution, in this month’s Electronic Sound. We’ve interviewed both Mark Mothersbaugh and Jerry Casale for our cover feature, which explores how Devo’s record label were on the verge of sacking the band in the months leading up to ‘Freedom Of Choice’ and how the success of the album changed everything for the guys from Akron, Ohio. It inspired a host of other names on the burgeoning US electronic music scene too and, alongside our main story, we’ve picked out 20 of the finest American synth records of the 1980s. From big hitters to obscure transmitters, from the likes of Prince and Ministry to Screamers and Our Daughter’s Wedding, all of these artists owed something to Devo.

Marc Moulin, the journalist and label owner who came up with the original idea for Telex back in 1978, is sadly no longer with us, but we’re delighted to be able to talk to the two surviving members of the band, frontman Michel Moers and synth virtuoso Dan Lacksman, for this month’s cover story. Four decades on from their best known records, they’ve lost none of their love for all things electronic. Or their wry sense of humour.

We are celebrating the 40th anniversary of ULTRAVOX’s classic ‘Vienna’ album in the new Electronic Sound. We have a limited edition Ultravox seven-inch on clear vinyl featuring two non-album tracks from the ‘Vienna’ sessions to accompany this month’s magazine too. We’ve interviewed all four members of the group – Midge Ure, Billy Currie, Chris Cross and Warren Cann – to get the full inside story on ‘Vienna’. From the split with original singer John Foxx (“We were at each other’s throats for a long time”) to working with the legendary producer Conny Plank at his remote studio in Germany (“There was nothing around us except cows”) to becoming one of the most successful electronic pop outfits of all time, this really is a great read. The many highlights include Midge Ure describing Kraftwerk as “a corduroy band” and talking about his brief spell in Thin Lizzy.

To accompany the issue, we also have an incredibly special seven-inch release, for which Hannah Peel has incorporated excerpts from a previously unknown interview with Delia Derbyshire into a brand new composition called ‘Unheard Delia’. As regular readers of Electronic Sound will no doubt know, we’ve been big fans of Hannah Peel for a long time, so our cover story has been coming for a while. Her new album, ‘Fir Wave’, sees her rewiring some of Delia Derbyshire and Brian Hodgson’s early 1970s work for radio, television and film, and the results are terrific, more than fulfilling the promise of her previous releases. Although we’re only three months into 2021, ‘Fir Wave’ is certain to be one of the essential records of the year. Hannah is a totally engaging interviewee too, as you will quickly discover.
