APU TrueGain is a powerful utility plugin which corrects for a fundamental challenge in audio engineering: a mix’s tonal balance changes depending on the listening level. By modeling the human ear’s frequency sensitivity at different Sound Pressure Levels (SPL), TrueGain allows you to audition and control your audio with perceptual consistency. The core of TrueGain is its ability to perform “translation checks.” After a simple one-time calibration to your monitoring setup, you can use TrueGain to simulate how your mix will sound at different loudness levels, all without changing the actual volume of your monitors or headphones. This allows you to quickly check how the bass will hold up or if the vocals will become harsh in quieter listening environments, ensuring your mix translates reliably.

A topic that’s often overlooked by novices, this will help you take more control of each element involved in your mix—from metering to plugins and everywhere in between. By the end of the course, you’ll know you’re optimizing every signal chain stage. These gain staging videos are designed for users new to the subject. Larry starts off by discussing the theory of gain staging and why it’s such a necessary aspect of music production when working in a DAW. You’ll learn specifics about making sure plugins (especially vintage ones) stay in their “sweet spot” for the best sound, along with other tips for maintaining a healthy signal level. Larry also discusses various metering options, including VU meters and peak levels, to make sure you’re keeping your levels under control at all times. Then, after demonstrating the procedure for properly setting input levels, he sets up a good initial level for the kick drum, which will be used as the basis for building our mix. This ensures we’ll have plenty of headroom in the master bus.
