Hattricks is an innovative vst plug-in dedicated to playing and programming quick rhythms typical for trap, r&b and hip hop hi-hats. Hattricks is a vst for trap that you subconsciously know you need badly and you’ll realize it once you see how it works! Tops of the charts* these days are filled with music that is at least to some degree inspired by the sound of trap. To identify a tune as belonging to or deriving from the trap genre it needs to have at least one of three elements: 808 bass, 808 snare and fast hi hat rolls. 808 bass is easy to lay down (especially when you have our Subdivine bass instrument), snares are easily placed on 2 and 4* and then… then you either add an audio hi hat loop and can’t change it’s sound later, or if you have a reasonably fast hand and good midi controller you play a hi hat pattern, but only a simple one, which may sound somewhat unexciting, or you step into that long, boring and laborious process of clicking in the individual sounds with mouse, which has nothing to do with being in the flow.

For years I’ve been teaching Music Technology in the college classroom. As a University Professor, my classes are sought after, and, frankly, expensive. I believe Ableton Live can be learned by anyone, and cost shouldn’t be a barrier. This class uses the same outline and syllabus I’ve used in my college classes for years, at a fraction of the cost. In this class, we are going to be making beats. Drum beats, in particular. You don’t need to know music theory, harmony, reading music, or any particular audio application. I’ll be using Ableton Live and some Logic in this course, but it will be easy to following along on whatever program you are most comfortable with. We will start the class off with basic rhythm theory, and learning where (typically) we put the kick, the snare, and the hi-hats. Then we will learn to adapt that pattern to work for a number of different styles.  This is a comprehensive class – that means there are three (3!) different classes that together make the complete sequence.
