‘Classic Melodic Trance Vol 1’ from Jan Franklin is an energetic collection of five huge construction kits. It features expertly-mixed drum loops, synths, pads, melodies and FX in both wet and dry formats ready for you to drop into your next trance hit. Jan produced most of these melodies between 1996 and 2001 so ‘authenticity’ is guaranteed. Each of the 5 construction kits contains alll of the loops and samples you hear in the demo; separate loops, MIDI loops and some one-shots thrown in for good measure. All samples are tempo and key-tagged, meaning they’ll slot right into your arrangement.

One Kit Wonder: Classic Rock has the low, bangy snare, the huge boomy kick, and the big warm toms that you’d expect, alongside an array of oversized Big Beat cymbals, all recorded in the glorious Middle Farm live room, set up as reflective as possible for maximal ambience. The resulting sound is definitively classic in nature but with a bit of extra sparkle on top and the extended bottom that modern recording allows, compared to recordings from 50 years ago.

In the 1970s, acts like Whitesnake, Deep Purple and Led Zeppelin not only paved way for a new breed of loud, beat-driven rock – they also revitalized the drum hero of the jazz-age and cemented the role of the drums as one of the pivot points around which they based their sound. Still to this day, the pummeling grooves of John Bonham, Ian Paice, Keith Moon and Bill Ward continue to inspire writers and underline the fact that in classic rock, the drums are – and should be – loud, obnoxious and play as much of a leading part as anything else in a song. With that as a foundation, we headed back to the genre’s heydays to capture some of its unmistakable traits.
