Inspired by Nature is a playful collection of visual Max for Live devices created in collaboration with Dillon Bastan. Produce generative soundscapes, unpredictable melodies and evolving modulations with devices inspired by physical forces and the natural world.
Set the scene with a collection of sounds for making music with a modern narrative feel. Evocative layered instruments combine organic and synthetic sounds with textural elements to add mood, space and movement to productions. Developed by Ableton, with contributions from sound designers including SonArte, Comakid, Aimée Portioli, Arovane and John Valasis, this Pack strikes a balance between delicate and dramatic to inspire compelling moodscaping and sonic storytelling. Designed to invoke different spaces and settings, these cinematic sounds can create a feeling of intimacy, add tension and suspense, or suffuse productions with movement. Drive tracks into the darkness with creepy experimental noises and tense rhythms, or foster a feeling of wonder with shimmering synths.
Expressive Chords is a Max for Live device for Live 12 Intro, Standard, and Suite that turns single notes into rich, dynamic chords. It helps you to explore harmonies, spark ideas, and perform expressive progressions with ease, especially when paired with Push.
Drone Lab is a place of sustain. Get lost in deep listening with complex, evolving threads of tone and texture, generative noise, multisampled instruments, plus devices and Racks designed for experimentation and improvisation. Explore continuous sound using this collection of tones and tools created by Ableton with contributions from experimental techno artist Xosar, ambient producer Ami Dang and the ModeAudio sound design team among others.
Microtuner by Ableton is a MIDI device that lets you import, edit, and generate microtonal scales. Load scale files, create custom scales, and morph between tunings in real time – all with polyphony, MPE, and Lead/Follow modes to sync your scales across instruments.
Now in public beta is CV Tools, a new Pack of 10 Max for Live devices that generate or receive Pitch, Control, Clock and Trigger CV. Soon you’ll be able to receive and modulate CV between your modular or other CV-based gear and Ableton Live 10 using a compatible, DC-coupled audio interface. You’ll also be able to use Live as the tempo leader or set it to follow your modular system clock. Plus, even if you don’t own a modular setup, the Rotating Rhythm Generator and CV Utility devices can add modular-style workflow inside Live or to hardware setups that don’t use CV-based equipment. CV Tools is being developed by Ableton in collaboration with Skinnerbox.
Everyone is looking for that elusive extra dimension to their mix, and Roland’s latest unit claims to deliver it right out of the box. Dave Lockwood assesses dimensional expansion for himself. The SDX330 Dimensional Expander is the latest addition to Roland’s RSS‑based Dimensional series, joining the SRV330 Reverb (reviewed SOS August) and the SDE330 (SOS October 1993). RSS (Roland Sound Space) is a processing system which utilises psychoacoustic properties to create the illusion of sounds originating in a three‑dimensional space, rather than just being placed across the traditional frontal soundstage. There are, of course, a number of well known simple techniques for making the stereo image wider than the loudspeaker placement would seem to allow. These usually employ a little of the opposite channel’s signal being fed anti‑phase into the other side. But RSS goes well beyond this and, in a well set up demonstration, really can cause signals to appear to be originating from behind the listener’s head!
