    I’ve always been a fan of ambient drum sounds, from the classic “one-mic” ’60s recordings of Ringo and company to the nuclear test-blast snare drums of the ’80s. UK company Perfectionear obviously shares my enthusiasm, as their new drum sample CD offers room ambience in abundance. The variety of sounds is large, ranging from tight, controlled kits to explosive, viciously compressed ambient bashes that shake the rafters. Throughout, the drum sound is fairly traditional and natural. The samples were taken from two drum kits — a vintage Ludwig set and a modern Yamaha kit — with Zildjian and Paiste cymbals. The sounds were simultaneously recorded from several different mic positions, so you get close, medium, and very ambient versions of the same recordings, which can be layered and mixed to taste.

    AMG Black 2 Black 1 AKAi: Black ll Black is a sample CD primarily aimed at producing R&B rap and reggae music – all the drums are swingin’ funky loops; the instruments are dubby and the vocal fills are soulful. There is a nod in the direction of styles such as garage and ragga, but this is pretty much for those wanting to create funky grooves. The drum loops are well organised, some with versions split into different layers. The vocal hooks are well performed and recorded (if a little cliched in places for example the ‘Baby’ track), nd the instruments are all very clean. One interesting area is the ‘Sample school’, which features grouped loops and instruments for you to put together sequences. After each section covering reggae, ragga, and swingcat) there is a demo to show you how things can work. Although based in quite a tight set of musical boundaries, Black ll Black is a very good example of how to construct a sample CD. The sounds are useful, well recorded and organised. If you write in any of the styles mentioned above, you could certainly do worse than buy this.
