Weird ambient sounds are like sonic candy. Now matter how many of them I’ve already devoured, I always crave more. New flavors spur musical inspiration and can give just the right taste to an otherwise bland track. So, I’ve made a bunch of fresh new instruments for you to consume. They’re derived from an eclectic array of objects… the motor of an old Wurlitzer organ, a rusty wok that the handles have fallen off of, my own voice, and lots of other things which I’ve twisted into this collection of unsettling, spooky, and beguiling sounds.
This Kontakt instrument uses sounds sampled from various 80’s samplers and 80’s synths. In creating this slection of sounds I wanted to provide an instrument that will have a wide range of sounds that will hopefully come in usefull in various studio situations. Some users of Zed Volume 1 have stated it has come in very handy in some studio sessions and a sound contained has rescued a session. Over 1.5GB of samples compressed to just over a GB using NI’s compression and well over 200 presets ready for your musical productions or tweek away using the graphical user interface. The libraries of Vol1 and Vol2 do have a lower fi vibe to them due to the nature of the older samplers some of the sounds have come from. I think it is true older samplers do have a certain magic to them and vibe.
This Kontakt instrument uses sounds sampled into a Casio FZ-1 sampler, various 80’s samplers and 80’s synths and drum machines. Over 1.5GB of samples compressed to just over a GB using NI’s compression and over 300 presets ready for your musical productions or tweek away using the graphical user interface. I have been a user of the FZ-1 for many years and love the way it adds ‘that something’ to anything sampled into it. The output from the samplers was connected to a series of vintage valve pre-amps before sampling for use in Kontakt. The piano we have chosen for this SampleSet is the Futura II, made by Nordiska Pianofabriken (Vetlanda, Sweden, in 1974). The complete SampleSet contains 713 individual 24 bit Mono WAV samples. The goal behind the Nordic Upright Piano is to capture the ring and dynamics of a good essential Swedish piano. This is a sampled piano that gives you freedom to place it in any ambient environment of your choice. The instrument was sampled in mono and the position of the close positioned microphone was changed per each octave. Then the piano was “re-built” in the digital domain by giving each string it’s own position in the stereo field. The result is a dry piano that gives you the flexibility to place it in any sonic environment you like.
