Harmonic’s Rhozet® Carbon Coder Loudness Normalizer and True Peak Limiter Using the loudness normalization doesn’t mean that the loudness will be constant during the whole program, but in this way, the average loudness will be the same for all the programs. So, you can change your loudness level according to your artistic needs, using (in most cases) a greater dynamic range than with the classic peak normalization. That means you don’t have to worry about the listener being disturbed, because the average loudness of the whole program will be equal with the target value that you choose. This is useful in all the stages of the broadcasting: production, distribution and transmission.

This video is a documentary made by Alain Le Kim from Soundstrips. It is a complete journey in the Manley factory, explaining what the equipment is made of and how those pieces of gear are built.
EveAnna Manley runs Manley Laboratories with an incredible amount of energy. The factory, located in Chino, California, 30 miles East of Los Angeles, is bustling with activity and employs about fifty people. On the T-shirts that she herself designs for the company, EveAnna has written : Built in Chino, not China. In these times where it has become the norm to delocate manufacturing in China, Manley is indeed an exception. Everything is done in-house, including the transformers used in the circuits. The products coming out of Chino are « built like tanks » as many people like to say. It would be more appropriate to say built like Aston Martins, since these are not only well built but refined pieces of equipment. With her energy, disponibility and generosity, it is not surprising that EveAnna’s friends are great people. We drove three hours to go visit artist Jim Messina. The reason ? fetch a collection of old vinyls that he offered her ! Jim opened his private studio to us and offered us an incredible lesson in the art of producing and recording music. He an EveAnna went through all the Manley gear he uses, and they discussed the best way to take advantage of their vast possibilities. Jim’s studio is a dream place, with rows of gears on his line of racks. Vox Box, Elop, Massive-Passive, Slam, everything was discussed to length, before we had to drive back to Chino.

Affordable, cross-platform loudness normalizing tool

The L-Normalizer is an affordable, cross-platform loudness normalizing tool. This particular application can be very useful and helpful for audio engineers working in post production and broadcasting environments. The major two steps of the workflow consists in analyzing the audio material and rendering an improved one. If you choose to normalize your material, you can pick between program loudness or short term loudness if your materials are shorter than 30 seconds. Also, a True Peak Limiter is available with variable knee width, release time and true peak.

ALM 5.1 is designed as a key component in your mixing workflow. Based on the new ITU, EBU and ATSC loudness standards, the plugin offers you full Loudness and True Peak Metering for Mono, Stereo and 5.1 channel formats featuring measurements for Momentary, Short Term and Integrated Loudness, with Loudness Range and Max True Peak Level. Wheter your want to target the loudness (-23 LUFS,according to EBU specification, or -24 LUFS, according to ATSC specification) or you want to use the relative gate of -10 LU, ALM 5.1 is all you need to control the loudness of your audio material. Both LU and LUFS scales are available, also, you can set the start and the stop of your measurements or you can simply let the plugin do it by following the host transport.

Audio Loudness Meter Extended 5.1 – Standalone, Audio Loudness and True Peak Meter application, with extended features BS1770 and EBU R128 compliant. Taking the idea behind the ALM 5.1 plugin a step further, we developed a standalone application, with extended features, that offers more control and power, allowing you to use it in more complex situations: the ALMx 5.1 (stands for Audio Loudness and True Peak Meter with extended features). The application was created as an aid for the television networks and media services providers. Recommendations regarding loudness levels exists in many countries, some of them have already implemented the standards as law, while others are in the legislative process. Just like the ALM 5.1 plugin, the driving forces behind the application are the algorithms developed according to the international broadcast standards (BS-1770, EBU R128, ATSC A/85), based on research and perception tests.
