Engineers. They work behind the scenes on pivotal records, ensuring that every subtle nuance, note and syllable of an artist’s performance is captured and presented to perfection. You see their names in the liner notes, but rarely do they step into the spotlight. One engineer whose sonic fingerprints can be found across an extraordinary body of music is Niko Bolas. Over the course of a remarkable four-decade career, his approach to the art of recording has helped shape seminal works by artists across the musical spectrum – from rootsy singer-songwriter and pristine AOR to loud, uncompromising hard rock. In this SDX for Superior Drummer 3, Niko brings that lifetime of experience to the fore, realizing his vision of the ultimate drum expansion: nine carefully selected kits, many personally owned by some of the most iconic session drummers in the world, captured with the detail, character and uncompromising curiosity that have defined his work for decades.

Like it, love it or leave it, Nashville Tennessee is Music City USA. With more labels, publishers, writers, producers, musicians and artists per capita than any other city in North America, Nashville knows a thing or two about great music, and more importantly – great sounding music. With the city’s history & culture so steeped in the art of making and recording music, the team could think of no better place on earth to record a library of drums that would be at home in music ranging from rock to reggae, metal to gospel or punk to polka. Oh yeah… they’re good for country & rock too!

THE ULTIMATE DRUM RECORDING?

This is the portion of the Roots SDX that comes with brushes, rods and mallets.

We could mention that we set out to record the best Jazz drum library ever made but ended up with something far bigger; drums that transcend the narrow confines of a genre and rather define an era – an age of music spanning from Jazz, Blues to Hip Hop and Rock. We could mention Blackbird Studio’s stock of 1400 Microphones, 35 channels of Pultec EQ, 24 channels of Fairchild compression and hundreds of outboard mic/pre channels including Telefunken, Neve, API, RCA and Chandler. Or how this studio not only is the natural choice for the who’s who of the music industry but that it is known to lend a documented bit of magic to every project to ever enter and exit its doors. We could even go as far as rant about how drummer and world musician Roy “Futureman” Wooten heard every single hit and swirl recorded as part of a larger whole, as part of a musical sequence rather than as a solitary, monotonous hit and that the result permeates every sample with an intensity and force unheard of. Or we could mention how these sounds incarnate the past, embody the present and at the same time how they will help you shape the sound of tomorrow through Superior Drummer’s endless possibilities.

A LESSON IN AGGRESSION.

The Modern Metal EZX was recorded by engineer/mixer/producer Will Putney at his own Graphic Nature Audio studios in New Jersey. Featuring five carefully captured kits, each handpicked for their unique tonal qualities, paired with Will Putney’s raw but still sonically immaculate production style, this EZX paints a unique document of hard-hitting, aggressive-sounding drums with a tangible edge, nerve and energy. In addition to the kits and the large assortment of cymbals, extra kicks and snares, the Modern Metal EZX also includes a comprehensive library of presets as well as a selection of MIDI grooves and fills designed for anything from heavy rock to death metal, hardcore and progressive metal. Ultimately, the Modern Metal EZX presents the embodiment of modern metal drums at their finest – fit for anything from hardcore to metal and any subgenre descriptor that may be wedged in between.
