Quirky Spring Reverb-based sound design machine

Spring reverb tanks have helped add a shimmery wash of shiny metallic ambience to electric and electronic sounds ever since someone had the genius idea of bolting a little tin spring inside a guitar amp and running the signal through it. Since that day, spring reverbs haven’t really evolved all that much – the biggest development in sophistication seems to have been, ‘Add more springs!’ – and their unnatural sound, slightly harsh overtones and tendency to go SPOING-OING-oing-oing-oing-oing when accidentally bumped soon made them the poor man’s choice when compared to plate reverbs, echo chambers and, eventually, digital machines from the likes of Lexicon.

Distinctive in design, harpsichords typically boasted two or more sets of strings, each producing unique tones. The sound was amplified by a soundboard beneath the strings, which transmitted vibrations through a bridge. The strings were plucked with quills rather than struck with hammers, so a key could only produce one velocity.

Ancient Greek Strings is a fantastic collection of 7 deeply sampled stringed instruments that delve deeply into the historic roots of Western musical traditions, stretching back thousands of years. This library features a Barbiton, Cithara, Lyre, Goat Horn Lyre, Pandura, Phorminx and Trigonon. Crafted of wood, gut and goat skins, these classic musical artifacts capture the sound and spirit of classical Greek civilization at its height. The influence they have had on modern harps, guitars and zithers is clearly audible and plain to see in these faithful reconstructions. Each piece was hand-crafted by master craftsman Panagiotis Stefos of LyrΑvlos in Athens.

We tried to get that wonderful nylon string sound that you hear in the movies at the background in a beautiful sounding space playing some haunting melodies on the higher strings of the guitar. We used our vintage Conde Hermanos nylon string guitar for sampling and our Lexicon 200 reverb to give it that magical space-feeling.
